Focus group responds to Trump's assertion that migrants are consuming dogs in an Ohio community.
This week, the claims became widely popular online.
In the presidential debate on Tuesday night, former President Trump made a controversial statement about Haitian migrants eating dogs in an Ohio town, which was met with criticism from local officials and voters across party lines in a Planet Chronicle focus group.
"In Springfield, the people who arrived are consuming the cats, while the residents are eating their dogs," Trump stated. "This is a disgrace and reflects the state of our nation."
The approval of all groups, including Republicans, independents, and Democrats, decreased when Trump made the claim, with the most significant drops occurring among independents and Republicans, while Democratic approval remained low.
The increase in Haitian migrants in Springfield has led to complaints from local residents, according to recent online reports that have gone viral.
A number of unproven allegations have been made that migrants have consumed ducks or pets. One such claim seems to stem from an incident in Canton, Ohio, where a woman was accused of eating a cat. However, there was no evidence to suggest she was Haitian.
Local officials refuted online claims about them, as reported by Planet Chronicle Digital.
The city has issued a statement denying any reports of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community in response to recent rumors about criminal activity by the immigrant population.
A report of a police call that claimed migrants had stolen geese has been used by a number of Republicans to support their claims.
After the exchange at the debate, Trump's approval among Republicans and independents increased as he broadened his discussion of the border crisis, attacking Harris for "destroying this country" and predicting that the U.S. would fail if she were elected.
When Trump was confronted by moderators and defended his claim, his support slightly increased among Republicans, while it decreased among Democrats and independents.
He stated that the TV show's hosts were saying, "My dog was taken and used for food."
