Despite 1 in 3 voters not knowing who she is, Democrat Alsobrooks leads GOP's Hogan in Maryland Senate race poll.
Hogan is fighting to expand his coalition while Alsobrooks works to increase his name recognition before the November election.
Despite more than a third of eligible voters not recognizing her name, the Democratic candidate for senate in Maryland is leading her GOP rival.
This week, a poll by Gonzales Research & Media Services revealed that Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks leads Republican former Governor Larry Hogan by five points, with Alsobrooks receiving 46% support compared to Hogan's 41%.
Despite the Democratic candidate's ongoing struggles with low name recognition among voters, Alsobrooks' current success in the polls is unexpected.
Approximately 34% of registered voters do not recognize Alsobrooks by name, including 33% of independents and 17% of eligible voters registered with the Democratic Party.
Notably, 72% of eligible voters did not recognize the Democratic candidate according to the pollster.
This year, after serving nearly two decades in the Senate and nearly six decades as a state and federal lawmaker, Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin will be succeeded by the winner of the November election.
The unexpected headache for Democrats in a previously safe state came when Hogan entered the race in February, as they tried to protect their fragile Senate majority.
At the start of 2023, Hogan departed the governor's office with high approval ratings and favorable public perception.
Hogan, a vocal Republican critic of former President Trump who previously flirted with a 2024 White House run, has repeatedly stated that he will not vote for the former president in November's election. In the spring, he distinguished himself from other Republicans by publicly calling for the guilty verdicts in Trump's criminal trial to be respected.
A poll by Gonzales Research & Media Services was conducted from Aug. 24 to Aug. 30, involving 820 self-described likely voters through phone interviews.
