DEMONSTRATIONS BREAK OUT: Shops secure their windows near the DNC in Chicago
The national convention of the Democratic Party begins on Monday.
Protesters opposing Israel are gathering outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, with authorities preparing for potential clashes.
The four-day convention begins on Monday at the United Center near the West Side, with an anticipated crowd of up to 100,000 protesters opposing Israel throughout the week.
The Chicago Tribune reported that at least seven large demonstrations occurred on the eve of the convention, addressing topics ranging from abortion to opposing U.S. support for Israel.
The city took precautions to prevent conflict by erecting barriers around the convention center and deploying a large number of police officers to the area.
According to Fox 32, approximately 150 Illinois National Guard members are on "standby" for the convention, as stated by Gov. JB Pritzker, D-Ill.
Businesses also boarded up their doors ahead of the anticipated protests.
On Saturday, over 300 police officers attended a training session with Police Superintendent Larry Snelling, as announced by the Chicago Police Department on X, formerly Twitter.
Vice President Kamala Harris will receive the torch from President Biden during his opening night address on Monday.
The convention where Harris will formally accept the Democratic nomination will occur from August 19th to 22nd.
