Democrats lauded Harris' debate performance, stating that she had effectively put an end to Trump's political career.
Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, declared that it was a "knockout."
On Tuesday evening, Vice President Kamala Harris received praise from democratic elected officials and political operatives for her debate performance against former President Donald Trump.
After the debate, President Biden praised VP Harris as the best choice to lead the nation forward, stating that he was proud to have worked alongside her for three and a half years. He emphasized that America would not go back with her as the leader.
"Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised Kamala Harris's performance in the vice presidential debate, expressing excitement to see how Republicans will attempt to spin the outcome," X reported in a positive message about Harris.
On Tuesday evening, Trump and Harris faced off on the same debate stage for the first time this election cycle in Philadelphia's National Constitution Center. The two candidates tackled the most pressing concerns for voters, including the economy, immigration, and abortion.
Harris' Democratic allies in Congress and pundits commended her for "destroying" Trump's career and demonstrated her commitment as a "serious leader" who will work tirelessly for the American people.
On Tuesday evening, the Harris campaign released a statement celebrating their victory, stating that "Harris excelled in every single issue that matters to the American people."
The Harris campaign announced that the American people will have the opportunity to see the choice they will face in the fall election: moving forward with Kamala Harris or going backwards with Trump. The campaign urged the public to pay attention to the upcoming second debate in October. Vice President Harris is prepared for the debate, while the campaign questioned whether Donald Trump is ready.
On Tuesday evening, Trump and Harris engaged in a heated debate over key issues affecting voters, with Harris asserting that Trump's stance on abortion would result in a nationwide ban with no exceptions.
Over 20 states have Trump abortion bans that criminalize doctors and nurses for providing healthcare, and can result in life imprisonment. These bans do not make exceptions for cases of rape or incest, which is clear. Harris made this statement on Tuesday evening at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
"A person who has been a victim of a crime against their body does not have the right to decide what happens to their body. This is unethical, and one does not have to compromise their beliefs to agree that the government and Donald Trump should not dictate a woman's choices regarding her body."
Trump stated that he supports exceptions for abortion, like Reagan did.
"During the debate, Trump stated that he strongly believes in exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. He added that Ronald Reagan also held this belief, and 85% of Republicans recognize the importance of these exceptions."
Trump and Harris engaged in a verbal exchange over the topic of crime in the US, with Harris refuting accusations that migrant crime has risen under her administration by referencing Trump's own legal troubles.
Trump stated during the Philadelphia debate that the crime rate is significantly higher due to illegal immigrants, some of whom entered the country under Biden's administration.
"Trump stated, "They allowed millions of criminals, including terrorists and common street criminals, to enter the country. They also allowed drug dealers to come in. Now, countries like Venezuela are telling their citizens not to return to the United States or they will be killed. Despite this, crime rates in Venezuela and other countries have decreased.""
Harris responded by bringing up Trump's criminal convictions and pending indictments.
Harris remarked, "It's ironic that you're making this statement considering your past prosecutions for national security crimes, economic offenses, and being found guilty of sexual assault."
"His next big court appearance is in November for his own criminal sentencing. It's important to clarify where each person stands on the issue of respect for the rule of law and respect for law enforcement."
After the debate, the Harris campaign proposed a second debate in October. Trump had consistently requested additional debates against Harris, following the single presidential debate in June against President Biden.
"Let's do it again," Brian Fallon, Harris adviser, said on X moments after the debate ended.
