The Canadian government is modifying its migrant worker program due to domestic criticism and tense relations with the US.

The Financial Times reports that the U.S. is putting pressure on the Canadian government to reduce the number of worker migrants crossing the border by tightening one of the world's most lenient immigration policies.

"The founder and CEO of One9, Glenn Cowan, stated that U.S. lawmakers are seeking to strengthen the northern border with Canada due to concerns about illegal immigration from Canada. He added that reducing the number of visas issued would improve U.S.-Canada relations."

Canada's foreign worker program has faced increased domestic criticism, reversing Prime Minister Trudeau's previous boasts about his country's open migration system.

In response to a deficit in polls before the upcoming election, Trudeau stated that he was examining different migration streams to ensure that Canada remains a welcoming country for immigrants while also being responsible in integrating and creating opportunities for success.

Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party, has accused Trudeau of damaging Canada's immigration system, stating that the country should focus on "slower population growth" in the future.

The report notes that under the new rules, the number of low-wage workers Canadian companies could hire would be reduced by 10%-20%, with Trudeau hinting at broader immigration reform later this year.

While some business leaders fear that ending the program may limit the availability of low-cost labor for Canadian companies, others believe it played a significant role in Canada's economic recovery during the pandemic.

Some people believe that the influx of migrants into the country has led to an increase in youth unemployment, soaring housing prices, and strain on the healthcare system.

The pressure on President Biden and Vice President Harris to control the influx of migrants into the U.S. has intensified due to record-breaking border crossings between 2021 and 2023. This issue has been a significant concern for voters, who have consistently ranked it among their top priorities, forcing Harris to adopt a more stringent stance on immigration before the November election.

The prime minister's office declined to comment on a Planet Chronicle Digital request.
