California Republican lawmaker responds to "insane" legislation proposing financial assistance for first-time undocumented homebuyers.
California Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher stated that the legislation was 'insane'.
Officials stated that California Democrats are "enthusiastic" about passing a progressive legislature that would provide up to $150,000 in first-time homeownership to illegal immigrants.
The California Housing Finance Authority's home purchase assistance program, or California Dream for All Program, would be required to accept applications from illegal immigrants under bill AB 1840.
The bill cleared the state Senate on Tuesday.
According to California Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (R-Yuba City), the proposed legislation would intensify the border crisis, the housing crisis, and the high cost of living in California.
"Democrats discovered a way to exacerbate both the housing crisis and the border crisis with a single vote, as Gallagher stated. By providing taxpayer-funded housing subsidies to illegal immigrants, costs will increase and more chaos will be encouraged at the border."
"This is insane and must cease," he declared.
Despite funds running out just 11 days after the California Dream for All program was instituted in June, which provided funding to 1,700 first-time homebuyers, the program passed. The main concern in floor debate was finding more funding for the program.
The bill, which offers first-time homebuyers up to 20% of a home's value or $150,000 in down payment assistance, is now being reviewed by the California state Assembly after revisions were made by the state Senate.
The bill passed with a 12-vote margin, despite some Democrats abstaining from the vote.
Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, has not stated whether he will sign the bill into law if it passes the legislature before the deadline of August 31st.
Gov. Newsom's press secretary stated that the California governor will assess the legislation upon its arrival on his desk.
