Both Harris and Walz advocate for granting amnesty to undocumented immigrants.
In August 2021, Governor Tim Walz, D-Minn., communicated to congressional leaders about a potential route to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
Gov. Tim Walz, who was announced as Vice President Harris' running mate, has previously advocated for broad amnesty for illegal immigrants, aligning him with Harris and suggesting that such a move could be a priority for a future Harris administration.
In August 2021, Walz communicated with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, advocating for a citizenship pathway for millions of undocumented immigrants as part of a possible budget reconciliation bill, including those shielded from deportation and those who arrived in the U.S. as minors.
The letter urged prioritizing a clean pathway to citizenship for essential workers, Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and their families while working on finalizing a budget reconciliation bill.
TPS recipients and immigrant youth are integral members of our communities, and they are the family members of hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens. They have been essential workers during the pandemic, and the nation owes them a debt of gratitude.
"Minnesota has benefited from the contributions of Dreamers and TPS holders, who have strengthened cities, schools, businesses, congregations, and families. It is crucial that Republicans and Democrats in Congress collaborate to pass bipartisan legislation that provides permanent protection for these individuals, replacing fear and uncertainty."
He aligns with Harris, who supports the Biden administration's day one comprehensive immigration reform bill, which would grant a pathway to citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants, putting an estimated 11 million on an eight-year path to citizenship.
The bill was not passed because of Republican opposition during a crisis at the southern border.
The administration and Harris have maintained their support for the legislation.
Harris stated in June that from the beginning of their time in office, their first bill aimed to address the immigration system by offering a pathway to citizenship, preserving families, and considering the Dreamers. Unfortunately, this bill was not taken up.
Congress must act and allocate the necessary resources to secure the border and establish a pathway to citizenship, as she later stated.
This year, Harris has focused on a bipartisan Senate bill aimed at increasing resources at the border and limiting arrivals when numbers become excessive. However, the bill does not provide a pathway to citizenship.
As the Democratic nominee, Harris' campaign has emphasized her efforts to enhance border security funding and combat drug smugglers.
Kamala Harris, as president, will hire thousands of border agents and intensify efforts against fentanyl and human trafficking. The ad released this week stated that fixing the border is challenging, just like Kamala Harris.
