As past comments on the 'militarization of police' resurface, the DNC presents Harris as a 'law and order' standard-bearer.
On Monday, the DNC aired a satirical skit comparing Harris and Trump.
The Democratic National Convention featured a parody of an opening segue from "Law & Order" in the video introduction to Rep. Jamie Raskin's speech on Monday evening.
The criminal justice system is represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute offenders.
The video portrayed former President Trump as a criminal defendant, with the narrator stating that he is a liar, cheats workers, and abuses women.
The narration continues, clearly implying that Vice President Kamala Harris is the ideal candidate to take on the case, given her extensive experience in prosecuting individuals like Donald Trump.
I am aware of the character of Donald Trump, as my opponent has described him in a similar manner.
Before becoming a senator, she was the attorney general of California and district attorney of San Francisco County. Notably, she won her attorney general's race with the slimmest margin in the state's history.
In 2009, Harris published a book titled "Smart on Crime," with the goal of making the criminal justice system "truly tough" rather than just appearing to be.
She has been criticized by Republicans for soliciting donations for the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which paid bail for Minneapolis riot suspects, and made several critical comments about the state of law enforcement.
In a June 2019 forum hosted by the Poor People's Campaign (PPC), Kamala Harris, Hialeah, Florida Mayor Wayne Messam, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., participated in a panel moderated by PPC's Liz Theoharis and MSNBC pundit Joy Reid.
Harris stated that he has a long-standing record of advocating for the demilitarization of police and believes that communities should no longer require law enforcement intervention due to their safety.
Recently, CNN and other networks have reevaluated Harris' past comments on policing, specifically her June 2020 remarks on a New York radio show where she stated that the Defund the Police movement was correct in its call to reassess police budgets and priorities.
Some municipalities were "militarizing police" while "defunding public schools," the Democrat stated.
In 2020, Harris engaged in a debate with Meghan McCain on "The View," where McCain questioned Harris about her stance on "defunding the police."
Harris responded by inquiring about McCain's definition of defunding police, while simultaneously suggesting that the U.S. should reconsider its approach to public safety.
"Yet, despite the dire need for mental health resources, public schools, and job training and creation in cities where one-third of their entire budget is allocated to policing, there's a need for change."
In a 2020 discussion with Andy Cohen and Laverne Cox, Harris argued against the belief that an increase in police presence leads to safer streets, stating that this thinking is outdated.
She stated on an episode of Chris Hayes’ MSNBC program that the belief that more police officers would lead to more safety is outdated, incorrect, and backward.
The Harris campaign did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment at press time.
