Amid public pressure, Canada implements sudden immigration crackdown, according to a report.
Since 2023, the number of foreign travelers rejected at the Canadian border has increased by 20%.
As pressure mounts from voters, Justin Trudeau's liberal government in Canada is increasingly rejecting visitors and temporary residents.
In 2024, an average of more than 3,700 people per month were turned away by Canada, and the number of refused visitor visa applications exceeded the number of accepted ones, according to a Reuters report.
As Reuters reported, the "spike" in rejections for Trudeau's party is due to the party trailing in polls ahead of an upcoming election, with many voters blaming Canada's typical liberal immigration laws for contributing to shortages and high prices for housing.
Canada is facing increased pressure and strained relations with the United States over its liberal immigration policies, with U.S. lawmakers urging Canada to reduce the number of migrant workers entering its border.
"The U.S. is seeking to strengthen its northern border with Canada due to concerns about illegal immigration from Canada, according to Glenn Cowan, CEO of One9, as stated in a Financial Times report last week. This move could improve U.S.-Canada relations."
Canada's Prime Minister Trudeau has frequently spoken about Canada's openness to immigrants and has been critical of U.S. border policies, including his 2018 criticism of the U.S. for separating migrant families at the border, stating, "what's happening in the United States is wrong."
During a press conference, Trudeau stated, "I can't fathom the hardships the families affected by this are going through. It's evident that this isn't how we operate in Canada."
Last week, Trudeau declared that he was examining different migration streams to ensure that Canada continues to be a welcoming country for immigrants while also being responsible in integrating and creating opportunities for success.
Since January 2019, the most foreign travelers rejected by Canada in July were 5,853, including workers and tourists, according to a Reuters report.
In 2024, border officers have rejected an average of 3,727 foreign travelers per month, a 20% increase from the 633 average in 2023, while the immigration department has seen an increase in the number of visas refused to accepted.
The number of approved study and work permits in Canada has decreased from their peak in 2022 and 2023, as announced by Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller in August.
According to the report, Miller stated that Canadians desire a system that is not excessive.
Trudeau's office declined to comment on a Planet Chronicle Digital request.
