A vulnerable Democratic senator who boasts about battling lobbyists has a history of hiring them.
Lobbyists are frequently switching between working for senators, with Brown ranked #7 on the list.
One of the most vulnerable Democratic senators in the U.S., who has a history of opposing the influence of lobbying in Washington, is also one of the most active senators when it comes to lobbyists entering and exiting his office.
According to Legistorm's revolving door rankings, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown is among the top 15 congressional staffers who have become lobbyists.
Brown's office has been lobbied by 64 individuals, placing him tied for #15 on the list of all-time lobbied officials, according to Legistorm.
In Congress, there are seven senators who are currently serving, and Brown is ranked #7.
Previous Brown staffers are now advocating for companies such as TikTok, Planned Parenthood, Exxon Mobil, and Kroger.
The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee chairman, Brown, has employed at least three former lobbyists as his chief of staff, according to a previous report by Planet Chronicle Digital. Among them is James Heimbach, who was once known as a "hot commodity" in the lobbying world. After leaving Brown's office, Heimbach continued his lobbying efforts, including time with Bank of America, one of the country's largest financial institutions.
Heimbach advocated for Cigna Corporation, a company facing allegations from Ohio that it inflated prescription drug costs by charging exorbitant fees for pharmacy benefit management services.
In Ohio, where Trump won by 8 points in 2020, Brown frequently criticizes the impact of lobbyists on politics, positioning himself as a populist Democrat.
He stated in a Rolling Stone interview last year that there is a problem with corporate America and politicians being influenced by corporate lobbyists.
Brown has frequently boasted about his battles against corporate lobbyists and his role in passing the Inflation Reduction Act.
"Sherrod has consistently opposed special interests to promote fairness for Ohioans, according to Brown's website. Regardless of whether it's Big Pharma, Big Oil, or Big Banks, Sherrod is determined to challenge the Wall Street profit-driven approach and ensure that hard work is rewarded for all Ohioans."
The Brown campaign spokesperson defended the senator's record and accused the Republican opponent of being self-centered and prioritizing the interests of his allies.
"Sherrod is fighting for stronger ethics and transparency rules for lobbyists, supports bipartisan legislation to crack down on foreign actors, and is fighting to lower costs for Ohioans by holding corporations accountable, while Bernie Moreno only looks out for himself and his special interest allies. Special interests are spending record amounts to defeat Sherrod, but Ohioans know that he always fights for them and will stand up to anyone who gets in the way."
Brown's support for the Lobbying Disclosure Improvement Act and co-sponsorship of the Honest Leadership and Government Act were highlighted in the campaign.
Sherrod Brown is a career politician who rewards the Washington swamp, according to Reagan McCarthy, a spokesperson for Bernie Moreno's GOP opponent.
"In November, Ohioans will finally retire Sherrod after 50 years in politics and elect an outsider to DC who will actually work for Ohio."
The Cook Political report ranks the race between Moreno and Brown as a "toss up," indicating that it is expected to be a close one as Republicans view it as one of their strongest opportunities to take back control of the Senate in November.
