A new survey shows that former President Trump and Vice President Harris are evenly matched ahead of their first and possibly final debate in Philadelphia on Wednesday, prompting some pollsters to view this as a "warning sign" for Democrats.
Since August, the gap between Harris and Trump among registered voters has narrowed from 3 points to 1 point, with Harris leading 49% to 48%, according to an NPR/PBS News/Marist National Poll released Wednesday morning.
According to the survey, among those who definitely plan to vote, Harris leads Trump by 3 points, with 51% support for Harris and 48% support for Trump.
In August, Harris had an 11-point lead over Trump among Independent voters, but a recent poll shows Trump now leading Harris by 14 points, with a 49% to 46% margin.
Ayers stated that Harris experienced a honeymoon period among Democrats following President Biden's departure from the race.
On Sunday, the New York Times/Siena poll revealed that the two candidates were tied in the latest results.
After Harris joined the presidential race, Trump appeared unperturbed by a surge of support for Democrats, with 48% of likely voters choosing her and 47% opting for the vice president.
The NPR/PBS News/Marist National Poll revealed a 9-point swing in Trump's support among Latino voters, with him leading Harris 51% to 47%.
According to the survey, a majority of Americans believe that Trump is better suited to handle the immigration crisis, economy, and Middle East, with 53% to 46%, 52% to 48%, and 51% to 47% respectively. On the other hand, Harris is perceived as the better candidate to handle the abortion issue, with 56% voting for her compared to Trump's 42%.
According to PBS News, Republican strategist Kevin Madden stated that Harris' initial surge of support and enthusiasm was due to her being a new candidate, not named Trump or Biden. However, Madden now reveals that recent polling shows this burst of excitement is subsiding.
The race has returned to a very close contest, with a bitterly divided electorate, and the election will be very close, coming down to a few hundred thousand voters in a few key states, according to Madden.
