A key senator who reportedly played a role in Harris' ascension to power has withheld his endorsement for president.
This year, Jon Tester's main priority is his bid for re-election.
Despite reportedly playing a role in Vice President Kamala Harris' recruitment to the Senate, Montana's vulnerable Sen. Jon Tester will not be making an endorsement in the presidential election where she is running as the Democratic nominee.
As chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) from 2015 to 2017, Tester led the efforts of the campaign arm to elect Democrats to the Senate during the time when Harris first announced her senatorial aspirations.
In January 2015, the Los Angeles Times reported that an adviser close to Tester revealed that he was among those who encouraged Harris to run for the California Senate seat after she launched her campaign.
Tester, who previously supported Harris, will not endorse her in this year's race as he will be concentrating on his own re-election campaign.
"During a recent press conference in Hamilton, Montana, Tester stated that he would not endorse for the presidential race and provided two reasons for his decision. Firstly, he explained that he was focused on his own race. Secondly, he emphasized that the race was about Montana and not national politics."
Despite being tapped as President Biden's running mate in 2020, Harris was not endorsed by the tester.
Kamala Harris, my friend and a proven fighter, is an excellent choice for Vice President. As VP, I am confident she will continue to fight for working families across the country. I am looking forward to supporting her and Joe Biden in November.
Despite being a Democrat, the senator has kept a distance from the Democratic ticket for several months, as he aims to secure re-election in a state where Trump won by 16 points in 2020.
"Despite who is in the White House, Jon Tester consistently stands up for what's right for Montana. This is why he has been endorsed by Republicans from across the state, including elected officials, business owners, and Trump voters."
In July, one of the first senators to urge Biden to abandon his 2024 presidential bid was a Montana Democrat.
In addition to being one of three vulnerable Senate Democrats who did not attend the Democratic National Convention (DNC), where Harris officially accepted the party's nomination for president, Tester was also absent.
In the 2024 Senate race, former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy opposes Jon Tester, stating that Tester's decision to skip Kamala Harris' DNC coronation will not conceal the fact that he launched her political career and consistently votes with her radical agenda.
""In November, Montanans will reject the America Last Democrats' agenda, which includes open borders, amnesty, and checks for illegal immigrants, higher taxes, and Green New Scam energy policies, and help send President Trump back to the White House," Sheehy stated in a Planet Chronicle Digital shared statement."
The Cook Political Report classifies Tester's race as a "toss-up."
