Whoopi Goldberg of ABC criticizes her network for casting a con artist on "Dancing With The Stars."
The Netflix show 'Inventing Anna' was inspired by Anna Sorokin, a convicted thief who was released from ICE custody in 2022.
Whoopi Goldberg, a co-host of "The View," criticized her own network, ABC, for casting convicted felon and con artist Anna "Delvey" Sorokin on "Dancing With The Stars," where she will be performing this season while wearing an ankle bracelet.
Goldberg said, "I recall families who have had family members arrested by ICE and have gone to court to get their loved ones back. This woman was given permission to do so. Now, should I believe there is a reason? Is there a two-tiered system with ICE?"
Sorokin, who was released from federal custody in October 2022 after spending 17 months in prison, has been on house arrest ever since. The story of Sorokin, who famously pretended to have a 60-million euro fortune while living a lavish New York lifestyle, inspired the hit Netflix series "Inventing Anna."
"Goldberg said, "I don't understand why she gets to stay," after co-host Joy Behar said it was because Sorokin was "pretty." "I'm listening to people complain about what's happening at the border and all these people who shouldn't be here, but what the hell, man? How does this work?""
In 2019, Sorokin, who was born in the former Soviet Union, was convicted of four counts of theft of services, three counts of grand larceny, and one count of attempted grand larceny for swindling a network of financial institutions and New York's elite into believing she had a fortune overseas.
"Goldberg acknowledged the importance of supporting ABC, stating that it was a "big slap in the face of a lot of people who've been trying to make their way back to this country.""
ABC News did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
The other co-hosts also weren't enthusiastic about Sorokin competing on the show.
Sunny Hostin, co-host of the show, stated earlier that the woman defrauded many people, spent two years in prison, and then another 18 months for overstaying her welcome and visa, committing another crime. The consequence of her actions was a bejeweled ankle monitor, a federal bejeweled ankle monitor, and a spot on a television show.
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin told the other contestants to be wary of Sorokin.
Griffin stated that she is still in debt to others and con artists often remain as such.
During a 2023 episode of "The View," Goldberg and Hostin criticized the Netflix series "Inventing Anna" while taking aim at Anna Sorokin's release from ICE custody.
"She's a young, blonde woman with a certain complexion, and that's probably part of it. The part that fascinates me is that she got paid $300,000 from Netflix for that series," Hostin said, referring to the Netflix show at the time.
