'We're just thankful we are all alive': Hurricane Helene survivor recounts 4-foot water rise in minutes
Delmus Williams believes the journey to recovery will be arduous.
A survivor of Hurricane Helene, whose home was destroyed by the storm, expresses his deepest gratitude for being alive.
On Wednesday, Delmus Williams informed "America Reports" that the water in the creeks rose rapidly, causing 4 feet of water to accumulate in his home within minutes. As a result, the family had to be rescued in canoes.
"He remembered how his wife and granddaughter were rescued from the back of the house. There was a woman standing alone at the back door, and he tried to inform her that help was on the way. However, they wouldn't let him go over there because the water was too deep."
The Williams family, who have resided in their North Carolina town for 40 years, were left with only a few shoes and clothes after the weather caused destruction in their neighborhood. Samaritan's Purse dispatched 50 individuals to assist the family in renovating their home and preserving their property, while their local church offered them sustenance.
"Although it was difficult for us, I am aware that there are others who are worse off, and our neighbor's tragic death in her home has made us appreciate our own survival," Williams said tearfully. "Thus, we are grateful for our lives."
The family is still undecided on how to rebuild, but they are focused on expressing gratitude to those who helped them during the devastation.
"Although we're not hurt, it's going to be a long road back if we can rebuild."
