Washington Post editors 'cancelled' piece from its 'gender columnist,' plan to eliminate role entirely.
Sources tell Planet Chronicle Digital that Monica Hesse, a liberal writer at the paper, will be reassigned.
The Washington Post is set to eliminate its "gender columnist" position after the writer's article was rejected by the paper's editors, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Monica Hesse, who was The Post's first-ever "gender columnist" in 2018, will no longer hold that title after her column about gender was "killed" by her editors, according to two sources. The specifics of what Hesse wrote and what the editors found objectionable are not clear.
According to sources, Hesse, who is currently a columnist for the paper's Style section, is expected to be reassigned either to its Opinions section or remain in Style as a reporter.
One source told Planet Chronicle Digital that it's "unnecessary and saddening."
Neither Hesse nor The Washington Post replied to Planet Chronicle Digital's inquiry for comment.
In 2007, Hesse began working for The Post as an intern for the Style team before transitioning to a Features general-assignment reporter. She later made history as the paper's "gender columnist." In 2023, her columns about the loss of the right to abortion after Roe v. Wade were recognized as Pulitzer Prize finalists, conveying the anger and dread that many Americans felt about this issue.
Her criticism of Florida's parental rights legislation has raised concerns among conservative critics over the years. In 2022, Hesse accused the legislation of being "homophobic and transphobic bills cloaked in neutral language."
She argued that drag queens are not responsible for sexualizing drag story hour, stating that they are simply reading books to children.
In 2023, Hesse accused critics of First Lady Jill Biden and Gisele Fetterman of "sexism" for enabling their spouses to run for office despite their mental impairments.
"In our culture, it is considered unacceptable to attack someone who is ill or elderly due to their condition, even for those with flexible morals who often find ways to bypass ethical boundaries. However, some commentators have taken advantage of this by placing blame on the wives of the president and senator, spreading harmful messages against them while maintaining plausible deniability against charges of ableism. These commentators are not targeting the men directly but rather scolding the women, who should have known better. This behavior is ableist with a touch of sexism."
In the 2024 election cycle, Hesse supported Walz's decision to provide tampons in boys' restrooms in schools as Minnesota governor.
The boy who casually said "Oh you got ur period? I stashed a pad from the bathroom in my backpack in case one of my friends needed it" would be the king stud, and he would be drowning in prom invites.
The Post's decision to eliminate its "gender columnist" position could be interpreted as a shift towards the center as the liberal paper adapts to the return of President-elect Trump.
Jeff Bezos, the billionaire owner of The Post, defended his decision to quash his paper's endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris just days before the election by alluding to making reforms in an op-ed.
"Bezos wrote in October that most people believe the media is biased. Anyone who doesn't see this is not paying attention to reality, and those who fight reality lose. He stated that reality is an undefeated champion and that a victim mentality will not help. Complaining is not a strategy, and we must work harder to control what we can control to increase our credibility."
