Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin resigns, criticizes owner Jeff Bezos.
Rubin expresses concern that the situation at The Post is deteriorating.
Jennifer Rubin, a longtime Washington Post columnist, has resigned from the paper, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Recently, Rubin, a vocal critic of President-elect Trump, publicly criticized the Washington Post, specifically its owner Jeff Bezos, for attempting to become more politically neutral.
In an interview with CNN, Rubin expressed her concern that the situation at The Post was deteriorating.
Rubin stated that the Post has failed disastrously at a time when we need a strong, assertive free press the most.
Several high-profile staffers, including reporters Josh Dawsey, Ashley Parker, Michael Scherer, Tyler Page and LeeAnn Caldwell, columnist Charles Lane, health and science editor Stephen Smith, and veteran editor Matea Gold, have announced departures for other outlets.
Last year, multiple editorial board members, including editor-at-large Robert Kagan, resigned after Bezos rejected a planned endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Ben Mullin, a New York Times reporter, posted her resignation letter on X and criticized Bezos in her departure.
Rubin wrote that billionaire owners of major media outlets, including The Washington Post, have betrayed their audiences' loyalty and sabotaged journalism's mission to defend, protect, and advance democracy.
"Jeff Bezos and his allies are undermining the values that underpin The Post's mission and the journalism industry as a whole, including integrity, courage, and independence. As a result, I cannot continue to work at The Post. I believe that Jeff Bezos and his allies are enabling the greatest threat to American democracy, Donald Trump, at a time when a free and vibrant press is more crucial than ever to the survival and prosperity of our democracy."
Jeff Bezos is being criticized by Rubin and Eisen through their new publication, The Contrarian, which has a tagline that reads "Not owned by anybody."
At the Washington Post, Rubin was both a staunch supporter of the Biden administration and a highly critical voice of Republicans, making him one of the paper's most polarizing commentators.
