Trump threat credited as 'big change' in securing cease-fire after Hamas rejected same deal in May.
Hamas did not want to wait and see what "hell" would mean, according to IDF Brig. Gen. Amir Avivi.
IDF Brig. Gen. Amir Avivi stated that two things have changed regarding the Israel-Hamas cease-fire agreement following fifteen months of conflict in the Middle East.
"Avivi stated on "Your World" on Wednesday that the deal has been on the table since May last year and Hamas opposed it completely. The reason for this opposition was that there was no real pressure on Hamas. According to Avivi, Israel wanted to stop some of the humanitarian aid, particularly gasoline, but the administration wouldn't allow it. As a result, Israel has no significant leverage on Hamas."
"Avivi informed Planet Chronicle that two significant changes have occurred: firstly, Israel has defeated Hezbollah, preventing them from supporting Hamas, and secondly, Syria has fallen, leaving Iran weaker. However, the most significant change, according to Avivi, is President Trump's threat."
Avivi stated that President Trump threatened them with dire consequences if they did not release hostages. He believed that if they did not reach a deal now, their chances of getting a favorable agreement in the future would be extremely low. As a result, they made their own assessment and decided to do the deal, hoping to maximize their gains now rather than wait to see what "hell" would mean.
John Kirby, the White House National Security communications adviser, acknowledged Steve Witkoff as a crucial figure in facilitating the agreement on Wednesday.
On January 7th, President-elect Donald Trump threatened Hamas, stating that "all hell will break out" if the hostages are not returned before his inauguration.
The agreement will be implemented on Jan. 19, one day prior to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.
Hamas may attempt to trick Israel in one way or another, according to Avivi's caution about the deal between the two nations.
Avivi emphasized that "just the beginning" and we'll have to "wait and see."
