Trump special counsel report shredded by legal expert: 'Vintage Jack Smith'
Smith's report was more about 'defending himself' than the election interference case, according to Jonathan Turley.
On "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday, Planet Chronicle contributor Jonathan Turley stated that the report on the investigation into President-elect Donald Trump and election interference, released overnight by former Special Counsel Jack Smith, read more like a personal defense.
Attorney General Merrick Garland's report, released early Tuesday, stated that Smith's office fully supports the decision to charge Trump with crimes because he attempted to retain power through illegal means after losing the 2020 election.
In his conclusion, Smith stated that the parties were debating whether any content in the "superseding indictment" was protected by presidential immunity. However, once it became clear that Trump had won the 2024 election, the department decided to dismiss the case because of its interpretation of the Constitution.
The report stated that the Department's stance that the Constitution prohibits the continued indictment and prosecution of a President is absolute and does not depend on the seriousness of the charges, the strength of the government's evidence, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Office fully supports.
In a Tuesday morning post on Truth Social, Trump accused Smith of being "desperate" and "deranged" for releasing his "fake findings" at night.
