Trump's 'YMCA' endorsement brings 'joy to the American people': Village People founder changes tune.
The '70s disco classic has experienced a revival on the charts following the 2024 election.
Victor Willis, a founding member of the Village People, has changed his stance on President-elect Donald Trump's use of the band's hit song "Y.M.C.A." as it gains popularity on the charts once again.
After years of requesting Trump to stop using the song, Willis allowed the president-elect's continued use of "Y.M.C.A." because he genuinely enjoys it and many other artists were trying to prevent him from using their music.
"I contacted BMI and requested that they not terminate his political use license as he was bringing so much joy to the American people through his use of Y.M.C.A."
The 2024 campaign saw Trump dancing to "Y.M.C.A." on social media and in the sports world. Now, Willis, the song's singer and co-writer, attributes the tune's recent success on the Billboard sales charts to Trump.
Willis, who previously criticized Trump's use of "Y.M.C.A." and "Macho Man" without permission, has now praised the president's decision to stop using these songs at his rallies.
At the time, he stated that the group wanted their music to remain separate from politics.
The new revival has ignited rumors about whether the band may perform the song at the president-elect's inauguration in January.
Willis stated that if asked about the Village People performing at the inauguration, he would likely say no due to concerns about endorsement.
"Although the president-elect has contributed greatly to "Y.M.C.A." and brought happiness to many, the song has returned to No. 1, and it remains at the top today. Therefore, if he requests the Village People to perform the song live for him, we must carefully consider the proposal."
