Trump's incoming border czar expresses optimism after meeting with Mayor Eric Adams: "NYC is on track to become safer"
In the face of an impending immigration crackdown, Mayor Adams is prioritizing public safety over politics, according to Homan.
On Thursday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with incoming border czar Tom Homan to discuss the city's ongoing migrant crisis and strategies for deporting illegal migrants with the help of the New York Police Department.
The acting director of ICE during President Trump's first term, Homan, has been appointed by the newly-elected president-elect as the border czar in the incoming administration.
"Mayor Eric Adams' approach to public safety in New York City is commendable," Homan said on Thursday night. "I had a productive conversation with the mayor for over an hour, and he understands the importance of prioritizing public safety. I wish other mayors, such as those in Chicago, San Diego, and Governor Pritzker, would follow his lead."
During their private meeting in New York on Thursday, Homan remembered the "ex-cop" emerging from Adams.
"He is deeply committed to ensuring public safety and has put aside politics to help ICE identify and remove criminals from the streets. He also wants to assist ICE in identifying national security threats and locating the over 340,000 missing children, many of whom are believed to be in the city. The meeting was excellent."
"The mayor deserves credit for collaborating with us," said Homan.
Since his meeting with the New York mayor, other leaders from different political sides have contacted him.
Homan stated that he had been contacted by several other mayors, including Governor Pritzker, who was willing to meet. He believed that Mayor Adams' actions today were beneficial for New York City and would set a precedent. Homan hoped that other mayors would follow suit after witnessing their success.
Adams was commended by Homan for his efforts to comprehend ICE's operations and his readiness to employ executive orders to tackle the obstacles that New York City encounters.
"Homan stated that Adams intends to review executive orders to reverse some of the harm caused by de Blasio. He wants to return to Rikers Island to arrest criminals and protect the community and his officers from the risk of someone in the community committing a crime. Adams also wants his law enforcement officers to release criminal aliens to the jail rather than on the street."
Adams discussed with Homan the possibility of the NYPD aiding in the search and capture of undocumented individuals across the city.
Homan stated that Adams has a lot of uniforms in the city who are knowledgeable about their neighborhoods. He added that the NYPD has one of the best intelligence apparatuses in the world, which will help them with their investigation. As a result, they will rely on every uniform in the city to provide them with information on the location of criminals.
Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants reside in New York City, with nearly 60,000 being categorized as "criminal" migrants, prompting growing concerns about safety and resources.
During the meeting, Homan mentioned Laken Riley's name while discussing illegal migrants in New York.
"Laken Riley's killer was arrested in New York City for endangering a child. If things were different, ICE could have taken custody of him instead of releasing him and him going to Georgia to commit that horrendous murder," Homan stated. "So he [Adams] asked a lot of great questions and I left that meeting feeling really good, and we're going to continue our conversations."
The incoming border czar expressed confidence after the meeting with Adams, stating that New York City will soon become safer.
Homan pledged to make New York safer by sending a strong message to the world that the city is taking the right steps to address public safety threats, particularly those who are not authorized to be in the country.
