Trump encouraged to intervene to prevent a speaker standoff and delay election certification.
The House is unable to function without a speaker, as reported by Planet Chronicle senior congressional correspondent Chad Pergram.
Despite a few party members posing a threat to the razor-thin majority, House Speaker Mike Johnson's control of the gavel is hanging in the balance, leaving the fate of the election certification uncertain. President-elect Donald Trump is being urged to step in as House Republicans face pressure to elect the next speaker quickly.
The challenge of becoming speaker of our conference has been extremely difficult for several individuals, including Kevin McCarthy, Mike Johnson, and whoever will be elected in the future, as Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., stated on Planet Chronicle on Sunday.
"In contrast to the 118th Congress, the 119th Congress will have a Republican president, Donald Trump, who is highly popular among Republican congressmen and their constituents," he stated.
Johnson faces a challenge in securing the necessary votes to become Speaker of the House, as the math becomes more difficult if some of his fellow Republicans vote for someone else, preventing him from reaching the required 218 votes.
The holdup "inhibits the House," preventing them from taking crucial steps such as swearing in members, forming committees, and certifying the results of the 2024 election if the issue persists until January 6th.
If the House is still sorting through its speakership issue on Jan. 20, the president pro tempore of the Senate could assume the role of "acting president" as the most senior member of the majority party.
According to Pergram, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, is "likely" to assume the role.
Donald Trump should speak with the five or six members who are hesitant to vote for Mike Johnson, as this will only delay the process.
"The delay in certifying President Trump's election will postpone the beginning of his first 100 days in office, which is the most critical period of his presidency. Historically, this timeframe is when the most significant accomplishments are achieved. Therefore, I urge President Trump to call and work towards uniting everyone so that we can function as a team and "Make America Great Again.""
