Trump clarifies misrepresentations of his statements in a new Dr. Phil interview.
He responded to remarks regarding not needing to vote again in four years and assuming dictatorial powers on the first day.
In an interview with Dr. Phil, Trump criticized the media for misrepresenting his statements.
Dr. Phil will interview Trump and his former opponent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. He shared a preview clip of his interview with the former president on Monday on X, highlighting the hostility of media outlets towards Trump's reputation.
"Dr. Phil observed in the preview clip that they frequently criticize you and emphasize the point that you stated, "You're only gonna have to vote one time, you elect me you're only gonna have to vote one time.""
At a Turning Point Action event in July, the former president stated, "You won't need to vote anymore, my dear Christians," before adding, "You must go out and vote. In four years, you won't have to vote again; we'll have it all sorted out so well that you won't need to vote."
Trump refuted the claim that if he is reelected, there will be no more elections, stating that this interpretation is incorrect.
"I told the Christians, 'We must win this election.' If we do, I promise to fix everything in just four years. However, if we don't win, it won't matter. In essence, I'm saying you don't have to vote, but you must this time because it's crucial. This election is the most significant in our country's history."
Did you mean, 'Vote me in once, because I won't leave,' or 'This election is crucial, so vote this time?'
"Of course, that's what I meant," Trump said. "I said it, and everyone knows I said it that way, and everyone agrees that I said it in that manner."
Trump also mentioned a quote he claimed had been misconstrued during a Planet Chronicle town hall in December. During the discussion, he stated that he would be a "dictator" for one day if he were reelected, explaining that he wanted to close the border and drill for oil. He later clarified that he was not a dictator.
Trump recounted his statement to Dr. Phil, saying, "On Sean Hannity, I joked that he's a great guy and I wanted to be a dictator for one day. I added, 'No, Sean, I wanna be a dictator for one day because I'm gonna get going with Drill, Baby, Drill and I'm gonna strengthen the borders to a level like you've never seen. I only wanna-be, and after that, I'll never be a dictator.'"
He summarized his past comment in a nutshell, stating that although he and his audience understood it to be humorous, the media misinterpreted it and took it out of context.
"I said, 'One day, I want to do energy and strengthen the border,' and it was met with laughter. The audience laughed, I laughed, we all laughed. But they took my words and twisted them, saying 'I want to be a dictator.' These people are dishonest and bad."
The former president responded to Dr. Phil's inquiry about the accuracy of the statement by saying, "Just watch it."
