Gen Z influencers are expressing gratitude to former President Trump after TikTok's 12-hour outage was lifted by the Biden administration.
James Charles, a makeup artist, expressed his frustration on Instagram Saturday with over 800,000 likes. He stated that he was "crashing the f—k out" and that the situation was "so dystopian" because he no longer had access to an app that had a significant impact on his life.
"Now I'm supporting Trump, to make America great again, I suppose."
On Saturday night, over 170 million American users were unable to access TikTok as the app displayed a message stating it would be offline until further notice. The app was no longer available on Google or the App Store. In April, the Biden administration signed into law that required the Chinese Communist Party affiliated TikTok parent corporation Bytedance to divest from the company or face shutdown in the United States. On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld the law.
"Unfortunately, a law banning TikTok in the U.S. means you can't use the app for now. However, users were informed that the app had resumed service "as a result of President Trump's efforts" the following morning."
After President-elect Trump announced that he would likely grant TikTok a 90-day extension, influencers and users alike praised the move, hailing it as a victory for their favorite social media app.
JFernandez81, a TikTok user, posted a video of themselves lip-syncing the lyrics "you are appreciated" from the 2pac song Dear Mama on Sunday, along with a message stating that their birthday wish came true and they hope to make TikTok great again.
A TikTok user with the handle soyelmajedelvideooficial posted a video expressing gratitude to Mr. Trump and affectionately referring to him as "Papi." The video received over 2,000 likes.
Kristina Dunn, an influencer, attributed the return of TikTok to the incoming president, stating, "He is the reason TikTok is back," while wearing a shirt featuring the prez-elect's face.
TikTok CEO Shou Chew expressed gratitude to Trump for his efforts to keep the app operational in the US.
Chew expressed gratitude to President Trump for his dedication to collaborate with them in order to maintain TikTok's accessibility in the US, in a video he posted on his TikTok account on Friday.
