The Washington Post cautions that Trump's decision to pardon Hunter Biden aids his politically motivated DOJ allegations: "Selfish act."
On Sunday, President Biden granted a pardon to his son, Hunter Biden.
The Washington Post editorial board criticized President Biden's decision to pardon his son Hunter Biden, arguing that it legitimizes President-elect Trump's accusations that the Department of Justice is being used against him.
The board acknowledged that Biden has the right to pardon his son, who was convicted of felony firearm and tax evasion charges, but stated that the pardon would benefit Trump, who is currently working to reform the justice system.
The board warned on Monday that Biden's pardon of his son could further erode Americans' trust in the justice system, which could justify Trump's efforts to reform it or, in a twist of fate, be used to benefit Trump's own side.
"The board stated that President-elect Donald Trump is appointing radical MAGA loyalists to top national security positions, indicating his intention to disrupt the professionalism and autonomy of institutions that possess some of the federal government's most formidable powers. Furthermore, President Joe Biden has provided him with cover."
The editorial questioned how President Biden could claim pardoning Hunter was just, after previously stating that he would not do so.
The board wrote that Mr. Biden argued that pardoning his son would promote fairness in law enforcement, but such considerations did not persuade him to pardon Hunter when he made that promise earlier.
The board questioned Biden's appeal to fairness after his son clearly broke the law.
The board contends that Biden's move implies that investigators at the IRS and FBI, career prosecutors, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and a federal judge in Delaware are being thrown under the bus.
The outlet criticized the move, stating that it erases all investigations into the son's criminal history, which spans several years.
"The president issued a broad pardon for any federal crimes his son may have committed over the past decade, including those not charged, without following the standard Justice Department procedure. This encompasses any illegal actions by Hunter Biden dating back to 2014, six years before Mr. Biden assumed the presidency."
The board predicted that Trump may use the Hunter Biden pardon as justification for clemency for his allies, including insurrectionists from January 6th.
The editorial board strongly criticized Biden's actions, stating that his one impulsive and self-centered decision has weakened the justifications he provided for running for president four years ago and permanently tarnished the conclusion of his political journey.
The White House responded to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment by forwarding commentary from an anonymous Democratic strategist, who stated, "The recent election results are a clear indication of how disconnected D.C. elites are from the average American. For years, Republicans' Hunter attacks have gone unnoticed by the public, and when they are remembered, they are associated with a father's love for his hurting son. Perversely, for years, legacy media has treated Democrats more harshly than they have treated Trump because they try to uphold norms."
