The top WH official states that drones flying over the country are legal and there is no evidence of a public safety risk.
According to John Kirby, commercial hobbyists and law enforcement aircraft activity are being observed in the assessment.
The White House, in collaboration with the FBI and state and local authorities, has determined that the drones flying across the country are legal and lawful, as stated by White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby.
According to Kirby, their examination of approximately 5,000 sightings has determined that lawful, legal, commercial hobbyist, and even law enforcement aircraft activity is responsible for the sightings.
The drones flying in the airspace are both manned and unmanned. Although it is likely that many of them are drones, they are flying legally. It is legal to fly drones in non-restricted airspace as long as you are registered with the FAA and there are thousands of these types of flights every day.
In a press conference on Monday, Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder from the Pentagon stated that over 1 million drones are registered with the FAA in the US, and approximately 8,000 drones are legally operated daily.
Over the weekend, an FBI official announced that their Newark office established a tip line in early December to handle the increasing number of calls regarding reported drone sightings in New Jersey.
According to the official, out of the 5,000 tips received through the national tip line since Dec. 3, only "less than 100 leads have been generated and deemed worthy of further investigative activity."
Kirby was questioned by Baier regarding the White House's evaluation that the drones lack foreign interference.
"Kirby stated that they have conducted detection and analysis, verified sightings, and in all cases examined so far, they have found no evidence of a public safety risk. Additionally, working with the Department of Defense, they have not discovered any indication of a foreign adversary, actor, or pernicious national security threat."
The White House and DOD are investigating instances of drones flying over military bases, as acknowledged by him.
"Kirby stated that the investigation is ongoing and they are still working through it. Sightings continue to be reported, and they have taken all of them seriously. They will continue to examine the situation."
