The Syrian rebel takeover will have a "noteworthy" impact similar to the fall of the Berlin Wall, predicts a GOP representative.
After rebels stormed the capital city of Damascus on Saturday, Syrian President Bashar Assad fled the country.
The civil war in Syria has reached a monumental turning point with the overthrow of longtime dictator Bashar Assad by a group of rebels.
One GOP lawmaker predicts that the takeover in Syria, which led to Assad's departure from the country, could have "remarkable" effects in the Middle East comparable to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
"The fall of the Assad dictatorship is equivalent to the Berlin Wall, which led to a ripple effect of dozens of countries becoming free after 50 years of occupation and totalitarian control, according to Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., on "Fox Report" Sunday."
On Saturday, rebels stormed Damascus, causing Bashar al-Assad to flee Syria with his wife and children.
During a Sunday speech, President Biden stated that the US lacked confirmation on Assad's location, adding that "reports suggest he's in Moscow."
Wilson predicted that Israel's success in weakening Iran and its proxies, as well as Ukraine's "weakening" of Russia, would have a "dramatic impact on the ability of war criminal Putin to enforce his capabilities."
On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the fall of Assad's regime as a direct result of Israel's attacks on Iran and Hezbollah, while acknowledging the situation is still fraught with significant dangers.
The Iran-backed regime of Assad was overthrown by a coalition of radical Islamist groups, with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a U.S.-designated terrorist group and former Al-Qaeda affiliate, playing the decisive role in evicting Assad, who inherited his presidency in 2000 following the death of his father, Hafez Assad.
"Lastly, we will remain vigilant. Be aware, some of the rebel groups that brought down Assad have a history of terrorism and human rights violations. We have taken note of the leaders of these rebel groups' recent statements. Although they are currently saying the right things, we will evaluate not only their words but their actions as they assume more responsibility," Biden stated on Sunday.
The president stated that in the event of any threat arising from Syria during the transition period following Assad's departure, the U.S. will support Syria's neighboring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Israel. Biden added that this effort will involve senior administration officials meeting with world leaders and the president directly speaking with leaders in the neighboring nations.
Rep. Wilson predicted that the Syrian people will advocate for a free and democratic Syria after the rebel takeover.
