The scheduled presidential debate between Trump and Harris has sparked a feud over microphones.

On Monday, the Trump and Harris campaigns engaged in a heated dispute over debate rules, specifically regarding the use of microphones.

The September 10 debate between Trump and Harris on ABC News is in jeopardy due to disagreements over microphone rules. In June, when Biden was still on the ticket, both sides agreed to negotiated rules, including Biden's mandate that mics would be muted.

Biden's team had initially planned to hold a debate with Trump, but after Biden stepped aside and was replaced by Harris, Trump suggested adding more debates. However, Harris' campaign refused to change the plans and the debate went ahead as scheduled. Trump's team later accused Harris' campaign of playing "games" by making microphones live during the event, which was a significant departure from the rules that Biden's team had established.

The Harris campaign was attempting to alter the debate format that had already been established, as suggested by Trump in a social media post about potentially skipping the Sept. 10 event in Philadelphia.

"Jason Miller, Trump spokesperson, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the games should end and that the ABC debate was accepted under the same terms as the CNN debate."

The Harris campaign, after agreeing to CNN rules, requested a seated debate with notes and opening statements. We refused to make any changes to the agreed-upon rules. If Kamala Harris cannot remember the messaging points her handlers want her to memorize, that is their issue. This appears to be a pattern for the Harris campaign. They prevent Harris from doing interviews, press conferences, and now want to provide her with a cheat-sheet for the debate. My assumption is that they are searching for a way to avoid any debate with President Trump.

The CNN debate was successful for Trump because the agreed-upon microphone muting enabled Biden to trip over a rake without Trump interrupting or talking over him.

Despite his initial stance, Trump appeared to disregard the significance of microphones.

Trump stated on Monday at an event in Falls Church, Virginia that the agreement was to maintain the same rules, but now there is a sudden desire to alter the rules.

"I'd prefer it to be on, but the agreement was that it would be the same as last time, and since I didn't like it last time but it worked out fine, I'm okay with it being muted."

Leslie Marshall, a democratic strategist, believes that cutting off the mics when candidates have finished speaking would benefit Trump.

According to Marshall, the statement makes Trump seem more refined.

"Marshall explained that the Trump campaign's decision to release the tape of him interrupting Kamala Harris during the vice presidential debate makes Trump appear less unhinged, which is beneficial for the Harris campaign. However, Kamala Harris may not want it that way because she may not be able to control Trump from interrupting again, which could harm her image. If Trump goes off and starts attacking her personally, it could benefit Harris by making her look more presidential."

Jason Rantz, a conservative radio host, characterized Harris' team's effort to alter the rules as a "desperate maneuver."

Rantz stated on Planet Chronicle Digital that Kamala Harris' attempt to renegotiate debate rules is a desperate move to divert attention from her poor record and refusal to hold a press conference. Trump should not waste time responding to her taunts and should adhere to the original rules they all agreed upon - Harris is simply trying to trap him in her game.

"The Harris campaign is struggling because she cannot compete in a debate without resorting to gotcha moments and low blows," he stated. "As a result, she is eager to have the microphone."

Brian Fallon, senior advisor to the Harris campaign, stated that ABC and other networks should require Trump and Harris to keep their microphones on during the entire debate.

"According to Fallon, we informed ABC and other networks interested in hosting an October debate that we believe both candidates' microphones should be live during the entire broadcast. Our understanding is that Trump's handlers prefer the muted microphone because they believe their candidate cannot act presidential for 90 minutes on his own."

It was reported that the mics were muted during the presidential debate due to the request of Biden and Harris campaign staff.

"Did Brian come up with the idea of the mute button? He argued that Kamala should be the successor-in-interest to the previously agreed Biden-Trump debate, and now he's asserting the right to change the terms of that debate," Will Chamberlain wrote to Fallon on X.

Abigail Jackson, communications director for Sen. Josh Hawley, stated that Trump had wanted to negotiate debates and rules with Harris, the newly chosen Democratic nominee. However, the Biden campaign refused and demanded to adhere to the rules that Biden had previously negotiated. Jackson added, "You guys made your bed."

On Monday, Michael Tyler, the communications director for the Harris campaign, stated on MSNBC that live microphones will be used unless "Trump's handlers allow him to override the decision." This implies that the Trump campaign does not want the former president to interrupt or talk over Harris during the debate.

Tyler stated that it is their preference to have live microphones during the debate so that the American people can witness the candidates' true selves and hear everything they say.

Some critics of Harris' campaign have proposed that they would create a viral moment if she shut down a Trump interruption in the same manner as she did with Mike Pence during the 2020 vice presidential debate, saying "I'm speaking."

Trump has also sued ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos for defamation and criticized the network for its interview with Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark.

ABC News did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
