The rejection of Florida's pro-abortion amendment is attributed to DeSantis' vocal opposition by pro-lifers.
An expert stated that the people of Florida were able to see through the "well-funded lies."
On Tuesday night, Florida became the first state in the country to reject a pro-abortion ballot initiative since the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Florida's Amendment 4, which aimed to establish progressive abortion policies in the state's constitution, was defeated after 43% voted "No" and 57% voted "Yes." The measure required a 60% supermajority to pass, the highest threshold in the country.
Florida's current law, which prohibits abortion starting at six weeks gestation, will remain in place. Amendment 4, drafted and supported by Floridians Protecting Freedom and led by Planned Parenthood and the ACLU, would have codified abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. The 6-week ban, implemented in May, has been a point of contention in the state, with proponents of the amendment arguing it is far too restrictive.
Pro-life groups praised Florida's electorate's decision while liberals were upset, with many thanking Gov. Ron DeSantis for his strong stance against changing the state constitution.
"Jeanne Mancini, president of March for Life, commended Gov. DeSantis's leadership in fighting against Amendment 4, stating that his bold and unapologetic commitment to the cause energized and inspired Floridians of all walks of life to join the fight against the amendment."
The people of Florida were able to see through the "onslaught of well-funded lies" and rejected the abortion amendment, despite the abortion lobby spending approximately $150 million in ads, according to AdImpact.
If voters are informed about the risks and extensive scope of abortion measures on their ballots, they consistently vote against them.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America's president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, thanked DeSantis for opposing Amendment 4.
"Thanks to Governor DeSantis, Floridians were not deceived by the abortion industry's scheme to profit from late-term abortions and eliminate common sense laws to protect the health and safety of women," she said. "DeSantis, GOP leaders, and the pro-life movement worked diligently to ensure that Floridians would not fall for George Soros' attempt to strip parents of their rights and force taxpayers to fund abortion."
According to Dannenfelser, the election results demonstrate that abortion was not the decisive factor in the 2024 election cycle, as Democrats had hoped.
"Despite spending half a billion dollars on abortion TV ads during the election, the Democrats still lost the presidency, Senate, and potentially the House. The reason for their defeat was their extreme abortion agenda, which is out of sync with American values. Their fearmongering tactics did not work, as most Americans support early and reasonable limits on abortion. The first presidential election since Dobbs has shown that aborting our nation's children is not the galvanizing issue that Democrats and the mainstream media believed it would be."
Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, concurred. Although the abortion industry spent millions and had allies like George Soros spending millions on their efforts to legalize abortion, it was not enough, she stated.
Floridians' resolve to safeguard preborn children remained unwavering despite the pro-abortion lobby's financial assault and the pro-abortion bias of Florida news groups.
According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, Florida's current law will remain in effect, resulting in the prevention of 50,000 abortions in the state.
The amendment's language prohibits laws from restricting or delaying abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient's health, as determined by their healthcare provider.
On Election Day, Florida was among 10 states that had a measure on the ballot to safeguard access to abortion. Most of these measures aimed to counteract restrictions enacted in Republican-led states following the Supreme Court's June 2022 ruling on Roe.
In 2024, two years after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a record number of voters think abortion should be legal, with two-thirds favoring a nationwide law guaranteeing access, according to a Planet Chronicle national survey conducted from March 22-25. However, DeSantis described Amendment 4 as a "bait and switch."
The Republican governor stated during a "Doctors Against Amendment 4" stop in October that if this amendment is adopted, it would be the first time in Florida's history to repeal a right.
""In Florida, parents have the right to give consent before their child undergoes an abortion, as well as any other medical treatment involving a minor," he stated."
The Agency for Health Care Administration in DeSantis' administration launched a campaign to combat false ads from the abortion industry, which pro-life groups claimed spread "lies" about receiving care for miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy in Florida. It is legal for doctors to perform abortions to save the mother's life in the United States.
Floridians rejected Amendment 4 despite pro-abortion proponents using the same tactics as in other states, such as fearmongering and disinformation, because they learned it would allow taxpayer-funded abortion at any time and for any reason.
"Governor Ron DeSantis led the effort to expose the truth about Amendment 4 from the beginning, despite the pro-abortion campaign of lies," he said.
Noemi Padilla, who worked at an abortion clinic in Tampa, Florida for four years, expressed her disapproval of the news. She stated that, based on her personal experience, she was responsible for the devastation that abortion had caused women and their families, including the grief, regret, and physical pain they experienced as a result of her convincing them that abortion was their best and only option.
"I spoke out in Florida for all of us who have left the abortion industry because we finally realized the lies we were told and the lies we were spreading to women," she said. "This victory is not just for Florida but for all of us who walked away from those clinics that ended innocent lives and left women broken."
Abby Johnson, the former Planned Parenthood director and founder of And Then There Were None and ProLove Ministries, also described Amendment 4 as "extreme."
""Tearing apart a baby in the womb is nothing short of heinous, and I am grateful that Florida will be a beacon of hope in protecting innocent lives," she said."
