In a rare interview, Pope Francis clarified the Catholic Church's stance on same-sex couples, stating that while he allows the blessings of individual people, he does not recognize same-sex unions.

During an interview with "60 Minutes," the Pope discussed a perceived shift in Vatican policy when he granted blessings to Catholics in same-sex unions, despite the Church's recognition of marriage as an indissoluble union between a man and a woman.

"Why did you decide to allow Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples last year?" asked Norah O'Donnell of CBS "60 Minutes."

"The Pope stated that he cannot bless a homosexual union as it goes against the Church's law, but he can bless each individual person. He emphasized that the blessing is for everyone and that some people were scandalized by this, but he questioned why."

In October, Francis wrote to two conservative cardinals, stating that blessings could be granted under certain conditions, provided that those receiving the blessing did not mistake the ritual for the sacrament of marriage. Despite initial media reports suggesting that the Church had endorsed same-sex marriage, the Pope clarified that all individuals were deserving of such blessings.

According to the Church Catechism, a blessing is a prayer that seeks God's power and care for a person, place, thing, or undertaking.

The Pope's remarks on same-sex marriage have sparked controversy among Catholics worldwide, with some welcoming the change while others criticize it.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued instructions to U.S. Catholics following the release of "Fiducia supplicans," which permitted pastoral blessings for remarried individuals and same-sex couples under specific conditions, stating, "the Church's stance on marriage remains unchanged."

In 2019, Pope Francis condemned governments worldwide for criminalizing homosexuality, asserting that it is not a crime but still a sin.

Francis responded to O'Donnell's past comments on homosexuality with the statement, "It is a human fact."

How do you respond to criticism from conservative bishops in the United States who oppose your new efforts to revisit teachings and traditions?

"The Pope stated that using the adjective "conservative" means being someone who clings to something and refuses to see beyond it, which is a suicidal attitude. While it is important to consider the past and take tradition into account, it is equally important not to be closed off in a dogmatic box."

Since 2013, Pope Francis has been the head of the Church and rarely conducts interviews on air. As the first Pope from the Americas, he has gained global attention through his public speeches on social issues and his efforts to reform the Church's sexual abuse scandals.
