The New York Times editorial board was disheartened by President-elect Donald Trump's victory, stating his return to power posed a "serious danger" to the country.

"On Wednesday, the board stated that American voters have chosen to bring back Donald Trump to the White House, putting the country on a risky path that no one can predict. The board later added that Trump's election poses a significant threat to the republic, but it will not determine the ultimate fate of American democracy. The outcome of the long-term future of American democracy remains in the hands of the American people."

Trump secured a triumphant victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2022 presidential election, regaining swing states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Wisconsin, and making significant gains in deep-blue states. Media outlets declared him the winner early Wednesday morning, and he vowed to bring about a "golden era" for the United States.

The New York Times is not among those enthused about Trump's win.

The Times wrote that Americans must be aware of the threat to the nation and its laws from its 47th president and be ready to defend the country, its people, laws, institutions, and values that have kept it strong over the next four years.

The incoming administration should be "cautious" of Americans and their motivations, as they are "transparently driven only by the pursuit of power and the preservation of their own cult of personality."

The Times raised doubts about his leadership in foreign policy, threatened to retaliate against his adversaries, and pledged to remain loyal to his enablers.

The Times advised Democrats to reflect on why they lost the election and criticized them for delaying their realization that President Biden was not fit to run for another term. After a poor debate performance against Trump in June, the Times urged Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee. Under immense pressure, Biden eventually withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris on July 21, sparking a heated race to the finish.

The New York Times endorsed Kamala Harris in September, stating that she was the only patriotic candidate and that Trump was unfit for the office.

The Times backing a Democratic candidate in the 17th consecutive presidential election was not a shocker.
