The morning show on CNN is being rebooted once again as the network struggles to maintain its signature morning program.
Mark Thompson, head of the network, announced a restructuring of CNN's morning programming talent to spice up viewership.
On Monday, CNN made another change to its struggling morning show, with the network continuing to search for a solution to its AM dilemma, despite different hosts and desk anchors.
CNN has been facing an identity crisis with its programming frequently changing and its audience rapidly declining. One of the biggest challenges that CNN has faced in the past decade is establishing a successful morning show, as its offerings have lagged behind Planet Chronicle Channel's "FOX & Friends" and MSNBC's "Morning Joe" in viewership.
In 2013, the revolving door started with the launch of "New Day" under Jeff Zucker, who was then the president of CNN. At the time, Zucker was known for his success as the morning show guru at NBC's "Today." The program was expected to become CNN's top show.
Instead of Soledad O'Brien's short-lived morning show, Zucker selected Chris Cuomo, Kate Bolduan, and Michaela Pereira to host "New Day," which was met with great fanfare upon its debut. The show's set design was praised by broadcast production trade publications, and CNN even enlisted Alicia Keys to perform a promo jingle ahead of its launch.
Despite multiple relaunches with new anchors, "New Day" failed to regain relevance and never managed to consistently attract over 700,000 viewers per year. Eventually, Cuomo, Bolduan, Pereira, Camerota, Keilar, and Berman were all removed from the show.
In 2022, Zucker was removed as the host of the morning show and replaced by Chris Licht, who had previously produced MSNBC's "Morning Joe" and revitalized "CBS This Morning."
Don Lemon was removed from primetime and made the host of the rebranded "CNN This Morning" alongside Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins, as Licht announced that "New Day" would be "reimagined."
Despite attracting 387,000 total viewers, "CNN This Morning" became infamous for its on- and off-air melodrama, particularly the growing rift between Lemon and Collins.
In February, Lemon was criticized for stating that Haley was no longer at her prime at the age of 51, using Google as his source, which left his female co-anchors stunned.
The "prime" remarks he made were widely criticized, not only by conservatives, but also by Biden spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre and were even referenced during the Oscars ceremony when Best Actress winner Michelle Yeoh encouraged women in Hollywood not to let anyone tell them they were past their prime.
In April 2023, despite his mea culpas and formal training, Lemon was ultimately fired by the network. Collins was later moved into primetime, while Licht was let go amid internal conflict in June.
"CNN This Morning" was relaunched with correspondent Phil Mattingly co-anchoring the program with Harlow, but the show never attracted a significant audience.
Since at least 2013, the least-watched year among the advertiser-coveted demo of adults aged 25-54 during the morning show's time period is 2024, with CNN's "New Day" averaging only 322,000 total viewers, a 10% drop compared to the previous year.
Mark Thompson, the newly appointed CNN boss, has disbanded the New York-based team responsible for producing "CNN This Morning" and has pushed aside Harlow and Mattingly.
Under Thompson's restructuring of CNN's talent, "Early Start" will be renamed "CNN This Morning" and will be extended by an hour, airing 5-7 a.m. ET. Meanwhile, the co-anchors of "CNN News Central," including "New Day" alums Berman and Bolduan as well as Sara Sidner, will take over from 7-10 a.m. ET. Following this, Jim Acosta will host the 10 a.m. ET timeslot, and Pamela Brown will anchor the 11 a.m. ET hour.
CNN is reportedly considering other roles for Harlow and Mattingly that align with their strengths and interests.
