The Manhattan DA's office should be investigated by the federal government for civil rights violations, according to a call from the Trump administration.
The Penny case will be Bragg's lasting legacy, according to Manhattan DA candidate Maud Maron.
Councilwoman Paladino is calling on the Trump administration to investigate the Manhattan District Attorney's Office after Daniel Penny's acquittal, claiming that District Attorney Bragg's charges in the subway chokehold case were politically motivated.
The Manhattan D.A.'s racial pursuit of Trump has been made more complicated by A.G. Bragg's actions. The D.A. has made it a vendetta and is definitely political. This has politicized the situation, and I believe the whole DA's office in Manhattan needs to be investigated.
Paladino, a Republican, has been an advocate for 26-year-old Penny, publicly supporting her and arguing that she had been "failed by the system" at a news conference last year, where he demanded a fair trial for her.
Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man, died on a New York City subway after being put in a chokehold by Penny, who was subsequently charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.
On Friday, the manslaughter charge was dropped by the prosecution because jurors were unable to reach a unanimous agreement twice.
On Monday, Penny was found not guilty of the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide, sparking protests from Black Lives Matter activists.
Paladino stated that the jurors were determined to convict the defendant, and he believed that many people on Friday knew this and sat on the jury, which is why the verdict came back so quickly.
In response to the acquittal, Bragg stated, "The jury has now spoken. At the Manhattan D.A.'s Office, we deeply respect the jury process, and we respect their verdict."
Unfortunately, during the trial, career prosecutors and their families were subjected to hate and threats through social media, phone calls, and emails. This behavior is unacceptable, and everyone should condemn it, regardless of their stance on the case.
"Prosecutors who have devoted decades to public service and the safety of Manhattan are being thanked for their dedication. The NYPD is also being commended for their hard work and commitment to the people of New York. Judge Wiley is being thanked for presiding over the case. Lastly, the members of the jury are being thanked for taking time out of their lives to carefully evaluate the evidence."
On Monday, Lawrence Jones of "Fox & Friends" interviewed Maud Maron, an attorney and Republican candidate for Bragg's seat, who criticized the progressive D.A. during the interview.
She stated that Alvin Bragg entered the office with a memo on his first day that contained numerous errors, stating that he would not prosecute, resisting arrest, and treating certain felonies as misdemeanors, which is not his responsibility.
"He is ending his term with the Daniel Penny case, which will be his legacy. He attempted to prosecute a young man with no criminal record who had served his country honorably and bravely tried to protect people on the subway."
