The Los Angeles Times owner declares the establishment of a new editorial board to ensure that all perspectives are represented.
The LA Times faced criticism last month for not backing a presidential candidate.
The Los Angeles Times will soon have a new editorial board comprising "all voices," as announced by its owner in a post.
In the aftermath of President-elect Donald Trump's victory, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong emphasized the significance of diverse viewpoints in fostering "media trust" on Sunday.
When the President has won the vote of the majority of Americans, it is important that all voices are heard. Opinions are just that, and I will work towards making our paper and media fair and balanced so that every American's view can be respectfully exchanged, from left to right to the center. Coming soon, a new Editorial Board will be appointed, and trust in media is critical for a strong democracy.
LZ Granderson's article, titled "There's no mystery. White women handed Trump the election," received both criticism and praise in a "Letters to the Editor" piece that Soon-Shiong reshared on X.
On Thursday, he similarly posted, "The American people have spoken and @latimes will lead the way in providing factual and balanced coverage as the country heals its division."
Soon-Shiong reposted a CNN clip from Scott Jennings, who wrote about Trump's impending victory and Harris' concession, stating that Trump has a mandate and the late-stage surge of Harris momentum was shattered by working-class Americans of all races.
The LA Times faced criticism last month when its editorial board did not back a presidential candidate for the first time since 2008.
The owner of the publication scrapped an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris that had already been drafted by the editorials editor, Mariel Garza, after news about the non-endorsement.
"I am resigning to make it clear that I am not okay with our silence," Garza stated. "In dangerous times, honest people must speak up. This is how I am doing so."
Veteran journalists Robert Greene and Karin Klein also resigned following the news.
The editorial board's refusal to write a balanced analysis of both candidates' and their policies led to the decision, as stated by Soon-Shiong.
The Editorial Board was given the chance to write a factual analysis of all the positive and negative policies implemented by each candidate during their time at the White House, and how these policies impacted the country. Additionally, the Board was asked to provide their understanding of the policies and plans proposed by the candidates during the campaign and their potential impact on the nation in the next four years. By presenting this clear and impartial information, readers could make an informed decision about who should be the next President.
The Editorial Board opted to remain silent on the suggested path, and I agreed with their decision. Please #vote, the message concluded.
The Guild Unit Council and Bargaining Committee of the Los Angeles Times released a statement criticizing Soon-Shiong for preventing an endorsement of Harris.
Our owner's decision to block a planned endorsement in the presidential race has caused us great concern. We are even more concerned that he is now unfairly blaming Editorial Board members for his decision not to endorse. We continue to demand answers from newsroom management on behalf of our members. The Los Angeles Times Guild supports our members who have always worked tirelessly to uphold the integrity of our newsroom.
The Guild sent a message to Times readers urging them not to unsubscribe from the paper, as it would put their livelihoods at risk.
The Los Angeles Times Guild was contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for a comment.
