The LA fire department is consistently understaffed, and actor Denis Leary has brought this issue to the attention of 'The View.'
Over a week, 24 lives have been lost due to several wildfires in Los Angeles.
On Wednesday, Denis Leary informed the co-hosts of "The View" that the Los Angeles Fire Department faces budget cuts annually and has been understaffed for over a decade, exacerbating the ongoing wildfires in the region.
"The Leary Firefighters Foundation, founded in 2000, receives hundreds of requests for funding from fire departments across the country every year, with the number increasing each year."
The Leary Firefighters Foundation offers equipment, training, and other resources to fire departments nationwide. Leary explained that the high demand for these resources stems from the fact that fire department budgets are often the first to be reduced, and firefighters do not have the option to strike like other departments might.
In Los Angeles, the wildfires worsen every year, despite their budget being cut further each year. The fire department has been understaffed for over a decade, resulting in the layoff of department mechanics who fix broken-down fire trucks.
In a memo issued in December, the Los Angeles fire chief cautioned that the department was facing "unprecedented operational challenges" due to a $17.6 million budget cut.
On Friday, Chief Kristen Crowley informed the press that the city had been inadequately staffed and funded, resulting in a failure to meet the needs of its residents.
"Our firefighters can effectively serve the community if they are properly funded," she stated.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has launched an investigation into concerns that some fire hydrants ran dry, as Leary mentioned.
From a firefighter's perspective, the effectiveness of hydrants is irrelevant. The fire was a 100-mile-per-hour wind that resembled a hurricane. There isn't enough water in the ocean to extinguish that fire. Therefore, it's best to wait until the fire dies down before determining the problems. The fire department will provide the necessary information.
