The Biden administration will combat climate change by prohibiting the federal government from using plastic cutlery.
'Biden is concerned about plastic forks while the world is burning.'
The Biden administration has unveiled a plan to combat plastic pollution, with a focus on phasing out single-use plastics, including kitchen cutlery, cups, and straws, across federal departments.
In July, President Biden declared an order aimed at addressing the "climate crisis," necessitating a comprehensive effort from all federal agencies.
The White House announced that the President is determined to take bold steps to eliminate plastic pollution and urged the global community to join in, with the aim of decreasing worldwide production and consumption of virgin plastics.
The White House has declared a plan to phase out single-use plastics, including "plastic and polystyrene food and beverage containers, bottles, straws, cups, cutlery, and disposable plastic bags."
"The Biden-Harris Administration has set a new objective to eliminate federal procurement of single-use plastics in food service, events, and packaging by 2027, and from all federal operations by 2035, in line with their previous Executive Order."
Biden's initial executive order aimed to decrease the use of single-use plastic products on public lands.
Some Republican lawmakers criticized the Biden administration for its "laughable" and "absurd" priorities in response to the initiative.
Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., expressed concern about plastic forks while the world is on fire, as he stated to the Daily Mail.
"Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., stated that the messaging and absurdity being directed at the industry is not representative of the majority of people and will increase costs for many individuals, making it irrelevant to the deficit issue."
Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, predicted that the impact would be felt in "government offices" and "military installations."
Instead of reducing plastic, he suggested scaling back the federal government.
If they want the government to be less of a consumer, they should reduce its size. The reason it's the largest consumer is because it employs so many people and does so many things that it was never intended to do, he stated.
Some agencies may be exempt from the Biden administration's executive order in cases of national security.
The White House stated that the head of an agency has the authority to exclude specific agency activities, personnel, resources, and facilities from the order's provisions if it is in the best interest of national security, to safeguard intelligence sources and methods from unauthorized exposure, or to protect undercover law enforcement operations from unauthorized disclosure.
