As of midday Thursday, the fires in southern California have burned over 27,000 acres, resulting in the deaths of at least five people and the evacuation of more than 130,000 people from their homes.
The Palisades Fire, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, rapidly grew from 200 acres to nearly 3,000 acres in just a few hours, as photos and videos captured the devastation and loss of homes, businesses, and communities in its path.
The Red Cross has dispatched hundreds of American workers to aid southern California residents in evacuating the area and is preparing to send "hundreds" more to support the victims. They are readying truckloads of supplies, including cots, blankets, and water, to be ready to assist thousands of people in emergency shelters if necessary.
In a statement, the Red Cross emphasized their commitment to ensuring that individuals have a secure shelter and are not alone during this difficult time.
They implored residents to stay "alert" as the fires persist.
"The fires are being fueled by dry fuels, hurricane-force winds, and low humidity, making it difficult to contain them. The threat isn't over yet, as critical fire weather is expected to continue through Friday and next week. It is crucial that people remain vigilant, prepare to evacuate, and follow instructions from local authorities as the situation continues to evolve."
The American Red Cross Los Angeles division has compiled a list of available shelters and shared evacuation information here.
