The 'American Idol' alum was caught off guard by the intense criticism he faced for sharing his pro-life views.
A Christian singer acknowledges the common reluctance among individuals with significant influence to discuss sensitive topics such as abortion.
Danny Gokey, a former "American Idol" contestant, performed the national anthem at the March for Life in Washington, D.C., allowing him to utilize his platform to promote the pro-life message.
In the eighth season of "American Idol" in 2009, Gokey finished third behind runner-up Adam Lambert and winner Kris Allen. He is now a Christian singer and a 3-time Grammy nominee. Gokey frequently speaks out on social media about issues that are important to him, such as his passion for the unborn.
"Gokey told Planet Chronicle Digital that being at the March for Life was invigorating. He added that one of the biggest parts of it was seeing the bravery and courage of pro-life individuals, especially at such a young age, in the face of backlash."
He regretted that the pro-choice movement is often "targeted toward teenagers."
Young adults have been the target of several pro-choice campaigns. In 2021, parents were outraged when Planned Parenthood fliers were distributed to middle school students at Stewart Middle School in Tacoma, Washington, detailing their legal rights on sex-based issues, including their ability to get an abortion without informing their parents.
At the time, Eric Hogan, the assistant director of Secondary Education, informed a concerned parent that the flier was not part of their curriculum and should not have been sent home with students.
The pro-choice movement has become more vocal since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. Gokey praised the young adults who attended the March for Life despite facing peer pressure.
"He said, "I loved seeing a group of people boldly standing up and taking a stance in support of life.""
Recently, the topic of life was brought up in schools once again with the release of a fetal development video called "Baby Olivia." The animated video, produced by pro-life nonprofit Live Action, depicts the growth of "Baby Olivia" from conception to birth. Several states, including Kentucky, Iowa, Missouri, and West Virginia, are considering legislation that would require students to view the Baby Olivia video or similar fetal development videos as part of their sex education classes.
Some pro-choice OBGYNs contended that the video produced by Live Action was not suitable for inclusion in sex education curriculum, despite its certification by six medical doctors and its assertion of accuracy.
Dr. Jennifer Lincoln, a board-certified OBGYN, stated on Planet Chronicle Digital that the video is intentionally misleading, as it shows development from weeks after fertilization rather than weeks from the last menstrual period, which is how healthcare providers date pregnancy.
The 2024 March for Life slogan was "For every child, with every woman." Gokey has shared on Instagram his pro-life stance, which involves supporting both the unborn and mothers.
Gokey wrote on Instagram in December 2021, "I am pro-life and believe that God's heart is for all to be saved. While I am for the pre-born, I also support mothers. I believe that together we can fight for life and freedom for both babies and mothers. In America, 2,363 babies are aborted every day, but we can make a difference."
While many celebrities steer clear of politically charged topics, Gokey has been vocal about his stance on abortion.
He stated that people with platforms often feel hesitant to discuss taboo issues due to their sensitive nature.
"He recalled his first time posting a pro-life view on Twitter and being attacked, which happened about 10 to 15 years ago. He didn't realize how many people would become angry at the idea of supporting the birth of innocent babies."
Gokey stated that his current value system is deeply rooted in his faith in God and it was a natural decision for him to become a Christian singer following "Idol."
""The Bible makes it clear that when you are in Christ, you are a new creation. You take on the nature of God, which must flow through everything you do. Many of the people who made the show were raised in church, sang in church, and have put their faith in Christ Jesus," he said to Fox Digital."
