Some undecided voters were swayed by the "despicable" media bias towards Trump, according to a report.
A Gen Z focus group shared their thoughts on the presidential election with The New York Times.
A majority of Gen Z voters believed that mainstream media outlets' bias against President-elect Donald Trump had become so extreme that it influenced the election's outcome.
On Wednesday, a focus group of 13 undecided voters was asked by The New York Times about their feelings following the election. Despite most of them having voted for President Biden or being too young to vote in 2020, more than half of them admitted to voting for Trump, with only two having voted for the vice president.
For many of them, the press played a significant role in their decision.
A 24-year-old former Biden voter in South Carolina, Joseph, stated that the mainstream media was promoting Kamala Harris's candidacy. He argued that the country needs a check on the president to maintain a healthy democracy. If Kamala Harris had been elected, there would have been no media oversight of her actions.
Abigail, a 23-year-old former Biden voter from Virginia, stated, "I witnessed the media's corruption in their efforts against Trump. The clip of Trump saying, 'Put Cheney in front of a bunch of shooters,' was taken out of context. He wasn't suggesting Cheney should be shot. I cannot support an establishment that condones lying to us."
Georgia student George, 21, also mentioned the misleading Liz Cheney story, calling it "just despicable." He added, "Seeing The Washington Post’s reaction to them not endorsing a candidate — people resigning — it’s hell on Earth over there. And The New York Times is just clearly biased. Everyone is just so not fair to Trump."
Lillian, a 27-year-old Trump voter from Virginia, made the decision to support Trump after observing the media's reaction to his rally at Madison Square Garden.
Jack, a 22-year-old 2020 Biden voter from New York, admitted that the media has a "double standard when it comes to Trump versus Harris or just the Democrats in general."
Jack commented on how the "garbage" remark by Biden was overlooked, and how people on MSNBC and The Times praised Kamala's campaign as flawless. He speculated that this might be because Trump had substance while Kamala ran on joy.
Mark, a 24-year-old California 2020 Biden voter, agreed that the media went after Trump and never went after Kamala, had their own biases, and let it seep into their coverage of the election.
Some voters praised Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance's media appearances, with one deciding to vote for Trump based on Vance's New York Times interview. Others complimented Trump for going on "The Joe Rogan Experience."
Joseph decided to vote for Trump after listening to him on Rogan because he appeared more normal compared to the other candidates.
Jack from New York, a 22-year-old former Biden voter, believes that the three-hour, open, and honest conversation between Joe Rogan and Trump is a clear indication of which candidate is authentic and which is not.
Lillian proposed that Trump and Vance continue to appear on Rogan regularly while in office as a "cool way to provide updates on their progress."
Some criticized Harris' limited media presence, with her few appearances harming her image - one claimed he voted for Trump after she appeared on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast.
Laura, a 20-year-old intern from Maryland, stated that she was searching for a trustworthy candidate. A memorable moment for her was the "S.N.L." skit performed by Harris, in which she poked fun at herself. She felt that Harris's focus on entertainment industries and avoiding interviews made her appear disingenuous.
Laura, who ultimately voted for a write-in candidate, stated that she disliked seeing Harris primarily conducting entertainment interviews rather than focusing on actual interviews.
In the future, many hoped that the press would be more fair and less biased.
Joseph expressed the hope that individuals would disregard mainstream media and conduct their own research to understand candidates' true beliefs.
Abigail concurred, "I hope that in four years, the mainstream media will realize that everyone is okay and stop labeling Republicans as fascists simply because they have different views."
