SNL alumni podcast criticized for not addressing Doug Emhoff accusations, Bill Maher mocks
Maher advises against playing the game of making fun of people and to go both sides, stating that he doesn't like it.
On Wednesday, Bill Maher discussed the media's lack of coverage of Doug Emhoff's #MeToo accusations on the "Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade" podcast.
Maher was welcomed by the podcasters who recounted the SNL skit from last month featuring Spade playing Hunter Biden and Carvey reprising his "Church Lady" character. Spade was surprised that the troubled son of the president had not been parodied before.
Spade said he "constantly wondered why they never invited Hunter Biden to play. It seemed like an untapped opportunity," and added, "I envisioned a hot-tub talk show with guests and women."
Maher shifted the discussion to missed opportunities by SNL, questioning "Why didn't they satirize Kamala's husband when he was 'me-too'd'?" He added that "it's astonishing how this country is so divided, including in the media and entertainment sectors, that when something happens to your team that's negative, it's like the angel of death is flying over your house on Passover. Like, 'we don't see a thing here.' Because, you know, Doug Emhoff was credibly accused of things that others have been accused of."
Spade added, "That wasn't plastered everywhere."
During the presidential campaign, it was reported that Emhoff had physically abused his ex-girlfriend in 2012, which his spokesperson denied. Additionally, the second gentleman confessed to having an affair during his first marriage.
Maher stated that "it’s just wrong, you know? If you're going to make fun of people, go both sides, don’t play that game, I don’t like that," implying that SNL is biased towards politicians on the right while not making fun of those on the left.
During the 2024 campaign on SNL, Carvey portrayed President Biden, frequently poking fun at his age and instances of confusion. In the 2020 election cycle, the show publicly endorsed Biden's presidential bid but intensified its mockery of him in the most recent season.
Carvey stated that they went for it because they assumed he had stopped running, but after Biden was no longer the nominee, the rules became more relaxed.
