Since Election Day, MSNBC's liberal viewers have largely stopped watching the network, leading to the lowest-rated Wednesday in eight years this week.
Despite a historic news cycle following President-elect Donald Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, MSNBC has seen its audience decline since the election. The left-wing network, which has been consistently anti-Trump for nearly a decade, may be providing viewers with a break from Joy Reid and other hosts' criticism of Harris' loss.
On Wednesday, November 13, MSNBC recorded its smallest Wednesday audience since June 29, 2016, with 599,000 total viewers, while Planet Chronicle Channel had 2.3 million total viewers.
During 2024, MSNBC had an average of 991,000 total viewers on weekdays. On Wednesday this week, the network lost 40% of its usual audience.
On Wednesday this week, MSNBC's primetime line-up of "All In with Chris Hayes," "Alex Wagner Tonight" and "The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell" drew only 929,000 total viewers during the 8-11 p.m. ET hours, which is a 43% drop from its 2024 average of 1.6 million.
MSNBC hosts have expressed a range of emotions, including anger and anguish, in response to Trump's victory.
Stephanie Ruhle stated that Americans were putting the country's future at risk by selecting Trump as their next president. Claire McCaskill broke down in tears while watching Harris' concession speech. Jonathan Capehart admitted that he was still struggling to comprehend how someone could be elected who ran a campaign that was openly hostile, racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, and transphobic.
At one point, Reid attacked Latinos who supported Trump, claiming they would now "own everything" that happened to their families.
