Sharpton advises Democrats to focus on celebrating Biden's achievements rather than dwelling on election loss.
Sharpton said that 'Donald Trump cannot control the narrative that this was four years of failure.'
Rev. Al Sharpton advised Democrats on Monday to avoid boasting about President Biden's achievements, as this would enable President-elect Trump to control the narrative.
After Biden stepped down as the Democratic nominee and handed the baton to Vice President Kamala Harris, many Democrats believed it would be an easy win for her against Trump. However, with Trump's recent victory, some are reevaluating their perception of Biden, the only candidate to defeat Trump in a presidential election.
On Monday, an MSNBC panel discussed a recent Washington Post opinion piece titled "Protecting the Future of Progressives: Defending Biden's Legacy." E.J. Dionne Jr. argued that the most pressing issue is preventing Trump's victory from damaging Biden's domestic policy legacy, rather than developing a new electoral strategy.
Bill Clinton told MSNBC host Joe Scarborough that while he was concerned about "fascist rhetoric" and "democracy," many Americans are more focused on practical issues like the price of gasoline.
Clinton, renowned for his excellent communication skills, especially with the working class, advised him, "You must connect with them at their level."
"Sharpton concurred, stating that it is necessary to address the concerns of the people before discussing broader economic issues. He emphasized that it is essential to tackle the micro concerns before moving on to the macro level."
"While he continued, he believed that the Democratic Party and progressives should improve their efforts to amplify Biden's actions. This is crucial because if they disagree with 'The Times' column, they risk losing support in the midterm elections and other events."
Biden had significant achievements, particularly for the Black community, as Sharpton pointed out.
Joe Biden has accomplished many impressive feats, including reducing Black unemployment to its lowest point in decades. He has also made history by appointing more Black women as federal judges than any previous president. Despite these achievements, they are often overlooked.
"Sharpton stated that he hopes the governor continues to grant clemency for large groups of people, as he did for 1,500 individuals in one day. This is a first. Additionally, he mentioned pardons for Marilyn Mosby and Jesse Jackson Jr.," said Sharpton.
If no one is discussing this, we would allow Donald Trump to portray this as a four-year failure, he stated.
The host concluded that despite not achieving all that was desired, more progress was made for working-class people and communities of color under Biden compared to previous presidents. It is important to celebrate this progress rather than dwelling on the loss of the election by less than 2 percent.
