Sean Penn expresses pride in Biden for pardoning Hunter, calling him "one of the finest people I know."
The actor commended Biden for pardoning his son, stating that any father who did not do the same would have been negligent.
Sean Penn defended President Biden for pardoning his son, stating that the charges against Hunter were a "horrible hit job."
Biden's pardon spares his son from federal court cases involving tax evasion and gun charges, and covers any potential crimes Hunter Biden committed or may have committed from 2014 to 2024.
Some members of the Democratic Party have expressed anger towards the president for granting a pardon on Sunday, despite his previous promises not to do so.
The president's decision has been defended by many, including Penn, who expressed his pride in it.
"In a new interview with Variety, Penn stated, "Any father who didn't pardon Hunter Biden would have been negligent, in my opinion. I'm not sure if I'd want to have a beer with someone who wouldn't have pardoned their son.""
Penn stated that the case against the younger Biden was politically motivated, calling it "existentially insane," and a "hit job," while also describing Hunter as a "close" friend and "one of the finest people he knows."
"Because I am close with him, I have studied the case, but there is almost no precedent for the aggression with which he was charged, even though there are technicalities within one of the cases that are associated with illegality."
Penn stated that he believed President Biden's decision was significantly impacted by the impending threat of President-elect Trump's administration, which he referred to as a "perilous farce."
He doubted that Biden would have pardoned his son if he had won the 2024 election.
He clarified that it was not a lie, but rather a change of mind and circumstances.
The actor expressed joy that his first son would have "the opportunity and room" to possibly assist those struggling with substance abuse.
"Hunter Biden, who has struggled with severe addiction, has much to offer those suffering or going through it, according to Penn. Penn expressed his happiness that there is now an opportunity for Biden to provide support to people, which he knows is what he wants to do."
After being pardoned, Hunter Biden vowed to use his life to assist others battling addiction.
"I have acknowledged my mistakes during my addiction and accepted responsibility for them, even though they were used to humiliate and shame me and my family for political gain," he stated to Planet Chronicle. "Nevertheless, I have remained sober for over five years due to my strong faith and the constant love and support of my family and friends."
"In the grip of addiction, I lost many opportunities and advantages," he said. "In recovery, we can be given the chance to make amends and rebuild our lives. I will never take the mercy I have been granted lightly and will dedicate my life to helping those who are still struggling."
