Laura Helmuth, editor-in-chief of Scientific American, expressed regret after making derogatory remarks about Americans who voted for President-elect Donald Trump, calling them "meanest, dumbest, most bigoted" and "f---ing fascists."

Last week, Helmuth faced criticism for attacking Trump supporters on Bluesky after Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, who was endorsed by Scientific American.

"I recall why I left Indiana, where I grew up, and appreciate those who remain and strive to improve it. The moral arc of the universe will not bend itself," she wrote.

Elon Musk concurred with a commentator who stated that Helmuth appeared as a political activist who had seized control of a scientific institution.

Helmuth eventually apologized and deleted the comments.

On election night, I posted offensive and inappropriate content on my personal Bluesky account, and I am sorry, as stated by Helmuth.

"I respect and value people regardless of their political views. Although these posts, which I have deleted, were a misguided expression of my initial shock and confusion about the election results, they do not reflect my beliefs or the position of Scientific American or my colleagues. I am committed to maintaining civil communication and editorial objectivity."

Since its inception in 1845, Scientific American has been the longest-running magazine in the US and has published articles by over 200 Nobel Prize laureates.

Scientific American did not immediately respond when asked for additional comment.

Helmuth's parent company and publisher Springer Nature did not respond when asked about their stance on him.

After the election, Helmuth posted a Scientific American article titled "Election Grief Is Real. Here’s How to Cope," which included insights from University of Minnesota emeritus professor and psychotherapist Pauline Boss.

Helmuth was previously a health and science editor at the Washington Post.
