San Francisco mayor-elect promotes practical solutions after defeating liberal opponent.
During the recent election, California experienced a notable shift towards the right.
On Tuesday, San Francisco Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie presented his "practical" approach in opposition to Mayor London Breed, whom he defeated last week.
Last week, Levi Strauss heir and founder of an anti-poverty nonprofit, Lurie, emerged as the tough-on-crime alternative to Breed's lax policies on theft, drug use, and homelessness that have long plagued the city. He ultimately defeated Breed by more than 10 points.
In an interview on Tuesday, Erin Burnett of CNN questioned Lurie about whether he believed his victory was due to running against "progressive" politics.
"Lurie, a lifelong Democrat, stated that they do not identify as progressives, moderates, or conservatives in San Francisco. Instead, they aim to return to common sense and prioritize delivering the basics. This is the mandate that Lurie was elected to fulfill."
To ensure a fully staffed police department, we must control our behavioral health and drug crisis. Small businesses must thrive, while big businesses should return to San Francisco. We must reopen for business. This is not a rightward swing, but a common sense approach.
Lurie's ads and public appearances were criticized by Burnett for attacking the city's crime and issue policies.
Lurie emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety in San Francisco, stating that being a candidate who supports public safety is not enough, and that more police resources are needed to ensure the safety of conventioneers, shoppers, and tourists.
He persisted in discussing the city's condition on CNN, emphasizing that reducing crime and promoting business growth are not political matters.
Lurie stated that people desire outcomes, but they were not seeing them. The city had 806 drug overdose deaths last year, which was not progressive. Property crime is rampant, and small businesses are struggling daily. The people want a mayor who is focused on delivering results, which was the mandate Lurie was elected with.
He continued, "I don't believe that is anything more than progressive values, and so I understand I'm talking to a national audience here. This is not liberal, progressive, or conservative. People want to feel safe walking down the street. We had so many instances of anti-Asian hate on our streets. Those are things that we need to get addressed."
Nearly 40% of Californians voted for President-elect Donald Trump, despite his previous lower percentages in 2020 and 2016. Additionally, the state supported efforts to overturn progressive policies such as Proposition 36.
