Ryan Lizza, a journalist at Politico, has been placed on leave after Olivia Nuzzi accused him of harassment and blackmail during a tryst with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
New York magazine has placed Nuzzi on leave after disclosures of a "personal relationship."
Ryan Lizza, Politico's chief Washington correspondent and Playbook co-author, is taking a leave of absence following allegations of harassment and blackmail made by his ex-fiancée, Olivia Nuzzi, in a court filing.
Last month, it was disclosed that Lizza and Nuzzi had ended their engagement after it was exposed that New York Magazine writer Lizza had been improperly involved with former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
In a court filing to Washington DC’s Superior Court on Tuesday, Nuzzi reportedly stated that Lizza threatened to reveal personal information about him in August, with the intention of ruining his life, career, and reputation.
Politico and Ryan Lizza have reached a mutual agreement that it is in the best interest of all parties for him to temporarily step away and take a leave of absence while an investigation is underway.
Neither Lizza nor Nuzzi immediately responded Planet Chronicle Digital's requests for comment.
Last month, New York Magazine put Nuzzi on leave due to the Kennedy disclosure.
Lizza was accused of harassing Nuzzi and attempting to blackmail her into staying together, as reported by CNN.
"Lizza was accused of stealing a personal electronic device from her, hacking her devices, and anonymously selling information about her to the media, according to CNN. Nuzzi claimed that some of the information may have been manipulated to harm her more, and she believes Lizza posed as an anonymous campaign operative to provide damaging information to a political campaign, as per court records."
According to CNN's reporting, Nuzzi accused Lizza of revealing their relationship with RFK Jr. to her employer through a third party or anonymous channel, and that he threatened her with violence to take on his share of the financial responsibility for their joint book contract.
A judge granted Nuzzi's request, temporarily barring Lizza from contacting her. A hearing is set for Oct. 15, giving Lizza a chance to respond in court, though the judge denied Nuzzi's allegations to CNN.
Lizza stated on CNN that she was disheartened by her ex-fiancée's decision to make false accusations against her in an attempt to shift the focus away from her own personal and professional shortcomings. Lizza vehemently denied these allegations and vowed to defend herself against them with great determination and success.
Nuzzi started dating RFK Jr. in late 2019 after interviewing him, who later suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed Trump. RFK Jr. is married to actress Cheryl Hines.
Initially, Nuzzi denied any personal involvement with RFK Jr. when confronted by her boss, New York Magazine editor David Haskell. However, she later admitted to the affair.
"In a statement last month, Nuzzi admitted that the nature of some communication with a former reporting subject had become personal earlier this year. Although he did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source, the relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict. Nuzzi deeply regrets not doing so immediately and apologizes to those he's disappointed, especially his colleagues at New York."
Nuzzi had only met Kennedy once, and a spokesperson for Kennedy previously denied any physical relationship between them.
A Kennedy spokesperson informed Planet Chronicle Digital that Mr. Kennedy met Olivia Nuzzi only once for an interview she requested, resulting in a negative article.
If New York Magazine had been informed of the relationship earlier, Nuzzi would not have been removed from her reporting duties on the campaign.
If New York Magazine had been aware of the relationship, it would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign. An internal review of her published work found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias.
"The magazine is currently undergoing a more comprehensive third-party review after the editor took a leave of absence, and the magazine apologizes for any breach of trust."
