Residents in a Democratic stronghold are angry about the increase in gang-related crime due to a large migrant shelter.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams stated that criminals with migrant backgrounds pose a great threat.
Illegal immigrants are causing criminal chaos in a mega shelter in Brooklyn, New York, and residents are afraid to go outside or use the city parks.
The once-charming and safe Clinton Hill in Brooklyn is now becoming chaotic due to a massive complex set up by New York City to house thousands of migrants.
On Sunday, locals gathered in protest against the escalating violence, increasing litter, and ongoing disputes resulting from the large housing development.
"Renee Collymore, the Democratic liaison who organized the protest, stated, "We must be heard. The time has come for action," emphasizing that the protest was not about anti-migrants but rather prioritizing safety."
The Clinton Hill complex in Brooklyn, which opened in July 2023, serves as a major emergency migrant shelter and houses approximately 4,000 migrants. However, this development has caused local community concerns about crime, noise, waste, and overcrowded public spaces.
For months, a resident has observed an increase in violence both on the street and in the community, as reported to a local ABC news outlet.
Recently, residents have come together to demand action following an investigation into a violent Venezuelan street gang, which led to the murder of two people and the critical injury of a third near the mega shelter complex on Sunday.
The community no longer has access to the parks, as one resident stated, 'Now it feels like that whole section is just not available.'
Another resident stated, "We've been urging the mayor about the escalating violence, and it was only a matter of time."
According to NYPD Assistant Chief Scott Henderson, who oversees Brooklyn North, the location now houses the "largest concentration of migrants outside of Randall's Island."
"The recent murders are extremely dangerous," said Adams.
He stated that the violent individuals we encounter are not typical of the majority of migrant asylum seekers who arrive here.
In June, a person from the Clinton Hill Shelter was arrested for a stabbing attack that severely injured the victim.
In April, complaints from locals arose after the city offered new shelter space for more migrants.
Mary Chang, who is 74 years old, stated at the time that our neighborhood and they cannot bear this.
Resident Alia McKee stated, "Ground zero of the city's migrant crisis mismanagement is where we are, and we must demand improvement."
Crystal Hudson, the council member representing the area, wrote a letter to Mayor Adams requesting more resources to manage the growing number of migrants.
An increase in population necessitates an increase in resources for communities, as my office and neighbors have been requesting assistance for a year without response.
During that time, the city was facing a growing issue, as reported by the mayor's spokesperson.
She stated that she manages hundreds of new arrivals in the city daily, in addition to the 65,000 already in the system.
