Report: Pentagon's education wing presented a "radical" book that labeled Thanksgiving as "White supremacy" to employees.
A Pentagon spokesperson stated that the book was utilized in a "voluntary study group."
The Pentagon's education wing recommends a book that allegedly claims Thanksgiving perpetuates White supremacy, according to a report from a watchdog group.
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is allegedly indoctrinating military-connected children with "radical DEI curriculum," according to a July report by government watchdog OpenTheBooks. With over 60,000 children enrolled in DoD schools located in the U.S. and globally, this issue raises concerns about the education being provided to these children.
The Freedom of Information Act request for "DEI personal development content offered to DoDEA employees" resulted in the return of a slide from a presentation promoting a book titled "Coaching for Equity." The book contains anti-American and anti-Western sentiment throughout its pages.
According to OpenTheBooks, DEEA staff were given a book titled "Coaching for Equity," which criticizes capitalism, patriarchy, traditional holidays like Thanksgiving, and the very existence of the United States as a nation.
The claim that Thanksgiving is linked to "White supremacy" and is part of the "distortion of truth" regarding U.S. history.
"The book stated that in the United States, we often forget that we are on stolen lands, which were acquired through deceitful means such as infecting Native Americans with smallpox, breaking treaties, and committing genocide. Our forgetfulness and manipulation of history have resulted in the perpetuation of White supremacy. For instance, Thanksgiving, a holiday typically marked by a feast and family gathering, has been sanitized, and the atrocities of colonialism have been erased."
The book claims that the United States was not established on the basis of fairness and justice.
It went on to criticize the United States for being a capitalist society.
"The development of notions of White supremacy was closely linked to the growth of colonization and capitalism, as the book explained. Capitalism, it is important to remember, gave birth to the belief that White people are superior and that people of color exist to serve their masters."
A group of GOP lawmakers wrote to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, urging the DoD to stop any alleged indoctrination activities.
"Reps. Elise Stefanik and Jim Banks accused the Department of Education of promoting racism and delegitimizing the founding of America through its policies, which they claim are being implemented to cater to the "radical woke ideology" that is damaging the education of military children. They urged the department to address the issue instead of exacerbating it."
The Pentagon stated that the documents from the FOIA request were part of a "voluntary book study."
The book "Coaching for Equity" was used in a voluntary book study, but it is not used in the DoDEA-wide educator professional learning or professional development programs, according to the DoD.
Banks stated that it is disgraceful and unjustifiable that while our soldiers are putting their lives on the line to safeguard our country, their offspring are being taught that America is a prejudiced nation not worth striving for.
Stefanik stated, "Ensuring that our service members' children receive a high-quality patriotic education should not be one of the challenges they face."
DoDEA teachers previously expressed their exhaustion with being mandated to follow DEI training.
One teacher stated that if they wanted her to begin lecturing the children about our history being racist, they should have informed her of this when she was hired because she wouldn't have agreed to it. However, she emphasized that it is not accurate.
"I call it a social Marxist direction," another said.
