Rahm Emanuel, a Biden official, cautions that Democrats have grown "distant and detached" from Americans.
A former Chicago mayor and Obama aide is reportedly mulling over a potential bid for the DNC chair position.
In a new op-ed, Rahm Emanuel, a former Chicago mayor and Biden administration official, expressed his disappointment that the Democratic Party has become "distant and detached," giving off an "aloof elite" image.
In a Washington Post piece on Tuesday, Emanuel argued that the Democrats' road to regaining power lies in acknowledging the rising tide of disillusionment among voters, rather than focusing on the "joy" theme of the Kamala Harris campaign. He pointed out that the party has been ignoring the growing distrust of the establishment.
"The public's trust in the establishment had been broken, and many in our party did not understand the severity of the situation," Emanuel wrote. "During the pandemic, Democrats shifted their stance and embraced the establishment. In their eagerness to follow the science, they shut down schools and the economy."
Emanuel accused Democrats of being out of touch with reality and focusing too much on woke issues.
Emanuel urged Democrats to prioritize the "voice of the middle class" in order to counter "Trump's populist facade," emphasizing broader concerns that the party has previously shied away from.
"We must confront the issues that are causing concern among millions, including crime, immigration, homelessness, and a fentanyl crisis. When carjackings are on the rise and pharmacies are locking down, it is impossible to ignore people's everyday experiences."
Trump was successful on these issues because his words tapped the public's frustration. Ours communicated permissiveness.
Emanuel, a veteran of President Clinton's administration, served in Congress and led the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to a successful 2006 cycle, resulting in Democrats regaining the House of Representatives. He later served as President Obama's chief of staff and was elected as Chicago's mayor. Currently, he is serving his fourth year as the U.S. ambassador to Japan under the Biden administration.
Emanuel was reportedly considering running for chair of the Democratic National Committee and quietly reached out to DNC members last month, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
One DNC insider stated that the "absolutely last person we need leading us" is an "arrogant elitist who has never worked a day in his life."
Rahm Emanuel may be talented, but the party needs new leadership with modernization skills and knowledge of the new media landscape. An insider told Planet Chronicle Digital that Rahm may not be the right fit for this role.
