Putting tampons in all school bathrooms is crucial for teaching kids to read, according to Tim Walz's wife.
Gwen Walz stated that if the topic of discussion is learning to read and closing gaps, then removing barriers is necessary. If the barrier is tampons, then tampons are the solution.
During an interview on Katie Couric's podcast on Sunday, Gwen Walz, wife of Minnesota governor and Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, stated that providing tampons in school bathrooms would aid students in learning to read.
Walz was questioned by Couric about the nickname "Tampon Tim" given to her husband by conservatives after he signed a bill providing free menstrual products in all school restrooms, including boys' rooms.
"If kids are hungry in school, it negatively impacts their brain and learning, which hinders their ability to learn to read. Therefore, to close the learning gap, we must remove the barriers, such as tampons, if that's what is needed."
"Remove the obstacles and let's focus on the actual work, rather than getting bogged down in the details and trying to level the playing field," she stated.
The law mandates that menstrual products be accessible to all female students in restrooms frequented by students in grades 4 to 12, as per a plan devised by the school district. This has earned Tampon Tim the nickname "Tampon Tim," symbolizing his socially progressive stance.
""We have always aimed to break down barriers to learning and achievement, regardless of whether it's access to free meals or menstrual products or self-identity, and we recognize that people have varying needs and resources but we all share the same goal," Walz stated."
"To ensure that our journey is not messy, we have considered it as 'What do we need to progress, be content, healthy, and successful, and how can we most effectively and best assist with that while minding our own business?'" she continued. "Then, get out of the way because I believe those two aspects describe Tim. He is compassionate, empathetic, and removes obstacles."
Walz added that schools should "give us what we need to give."
"Although he does a great job, I also believe that he should mind his own business and not get caught up in people's personal affairs. This is important because we need to focus on the real issues that we need to solve."
"Equity is about providing individuals with the necessary resources to reach a point where we can discuss," she stated.
Walz talked about the guidance given by second gentleman Doug Emhoff and the assistance he has provided her.
"She said that he is an amazing person who models support for his wife and empowers women, including her, which is truly miraculous."
Emhoff has been accused of hitting an ex-girlfriend and engaging in inappropriate behavior at his law firm, as reported by the Daily Mail.
According to the Daily Mail, Emhoff's first marriage ended after he had an affair with their children's nanny, who became pregnant with his child. The nanny's friend revealed that she did not keep the baby, but did not provide further details.
