Piers Morgan and Neil deGrasse Tyson clash over trans athletes and equality: "You've dug yourself into a deep hole"
Tyson's argument about separating athletes by hormone tests is deemed "absurd" by Morgan.
This week, in a heated debate, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and show host Piers Morgan discussed the future of competitive sports regarding trans athletes.
"Tyson stated on "Piers Morgan Uncensored" that he believes sports are at the forefront of figuring out how to handle the frontier of individuals who are trans. He added that the future of sports may not differentiate based on sex but rather on hormone ratios."
Bill Maher invited Tyson to his show to discuss the role of scientists in the inclusion of trans athletes in men's and women's sports.
"He said, "I'm making this up, but imagine if that were true. It would be fascinating. You'd take a hormone test, be in a certain range, and then compete against others with the same range.""
"Neil, that's ridiculous," Morgan said.
Tyson stated, "It's not true, and I'll explain why."
"Morgan stated, "I respectfully say this because I care about you, but it seems to me that you've dug yourself into a slight hole on this issue and are trying to get out of it. Your suggestion of slightly mad cat theories is not supported by science, which is clear to me. You've already given the best argument I've heard for why we separate the sexes.""
"You misquoted me in this very interview," Tyson said.
On average, men are faster and stronger than women in competitive sports, according to Tyson.
"Tyson stated that it is universally accepted and there is no debate about it; it is simply a matter of fact."
""What makes sports enjoyable is the unpredictability of the outcome and the sense of fairness in competition," he explained."
Tyson stated that if trans women dominate sports against other women, it may make those sports less interesting to watch. He suggested that the inclusion of trans athletes in sports may necessitate reevaluating how athletes are paired up against one another.
